Better Oblivion Community Center – Better Oblivion Community Center

Weekly Review:

From the moment they stepped on the stage of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Better Oblivion Community Center has had people lining up to get in. Hosting sold out shows all over the country, it’s one of the hottest tickets this Summer. Unlike the name implies, it’s not a place, but a band made up of successful solo artists Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers.
You’ve maybe heard of Oberst from his work in Bright Eyes or even some of his solo stuff. Hailing from Omaha, he is a founder of the Saddle Creek record label. Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Bridgers, at 24, she is someone to keep an eye on. Releasing her successful debut album Stranger in the Alps she followed up as a third of the super group boygenius. Her raw and honest storytelling feel as if she leaves a piece of herself in every song.
The duo work well together, with vocals from Bridgers being a nice contrast to Oberst’s rasp. The vocals forge their own path only to meet back up in monotone unison. You get the feeling they are both going through the same things, taking different routes to get there only to end up in the same place.
The first single Dylan Thomas shares the same name of the “doomed poet” who met his early demise at the age of 39. Oberst casually plays it off saying its because there was a copy of Thomas’s poems at the house they were recording in. They mention Thomas, almost in passing, “Four seasons of revolving doors, So sick of being honest, I’ll die like Dylan Thomas, A seizure on the barroom floor.” For Oberst, who is also 39 and owns a bar in Omaha, it’s either deeply personal or a very dark coincidence.
Didn’t Know What I Was In For was the first song the duo wrote together. It starts with Bridgers forelorned signature sound that builds to the accompaniment of Oberst’s voice. The song is filled with double meaning. In one instance there is mention of being stripped of their belt and strings insinuating institutionalization. Not knowing what they were in for at the ward or in life in general, it begs the question are they crazy for caring, or are they the only sane ones left in an insane world?
Ten songs is just the entryway. Let’s hope they continue to build the Better Oblivion Community Center piece by piece, song by song. It’s a place we should all spend a little time at. -Brad Simmons
