Black Mountain – Destroyer

Weekly Review:
The title of Black Mountain’s fifth album is a reference to the 1985 Dodge Destroyer muscle car. It’s also the title of a classic KISS album. If your going to use a title like, ” Destroyer”, you had better live up to it.
On this album, the car serves as inspiration for Black Mountain frontman Steve McBean, as the album has cruising in a car as a running theme throughout its eight songs. It’s about the freedom of hitting the open road and never looking back.
It’s a classic theme and it fits the band’s modus operandi quite well. Since their inception they have been masters of giving classic rock sounds a fresh, modern spin. They deal in rift heavy metal, that incorporates huge doses of psychedelic rock and prog into its hard hitting mix. Unlike bands of the past, Black Mountain has many musical weapons at their disposal, and also the hindsight to know how to deploy them in a way that is exciting. They are not your typical retro rock band.
On Destroyer, McBean along with long time bandmate Jeremy Schmidt and some new recruits set about to reclaim their throne as one of the finest purveyors of spaced out metal jams. The album is a great rocker from start to finish with the band pushing their sound into harder rocking realms. Honestly, it’s the type of album that would make the perfect soundtrack for cruising around in a boss, muscle car or spinning from your favorite turntable. Black Mountain has more than survived the lineup change and put forth a rocking good time. Stop by the Underground and pick up your today. -Albert Schmurr.

Marvin Gaye – You’re The Man

Weekly Review:
You’re The Man is an album that almost wasn’t meant to be. Marvin Gaye had a lot on his mind during the recording of this album. He was enjoying the success of his socially conscious album What’s Going On and had signed a deal with Motown making him the highest paid R&B singer at the time. He was also being investigated by the government for failure to pay back taxes. In response to that investigation (and overall frustrations, politics, Vietnam, Integration, etc) Gaye released a track titled You’re The Man. A scathing track in which Gaye demanded changes to the government. Motown, having a mostly conservative audience felt that Gaye was pushing too far, and refused to support the track, which eventually died on the grapevine. Gaye shelved the album to focus on other material and the rest is history. It’s a shame to, because the album, You’re The Man is as relevant today as it was over 40 + years ago.
One listen to the song You’re The Man and start to wonder is this about the current political climate? The line in the song “Politics and hypocrites Is turning us all into lunatics” feels all to real in this day and age. Track The World Is Rated X informs us that the world is in grave danger. It’s a funky tune with a fat bass line and the sprinkle of piano, strings and a harp. Gaye effortlessly croons over the top, with the realization that we can save the world with peace and love. Women Of The World is a bongo driven breezy tune that celebrates how long women have come over the years. “You’ve come a long way baby, it’s your show.”
The album also has a few mixes from hip hop producer Salam Remi and two Christmas tracks. The mix of the Christmas songs into this are a bit odd, but both songs are enjoyable and will be added to my Christmas playlist come the time. Overall, I really love this album. It’s funky, it’s thoughtful, its powerful, political and progressive. It’s Marvin Gaye! -Brad Simmons
