Domi & JD Beck – Not Tight

Weekly Review:

French keyboard player Domi Louna and American drummer J.D. Beck have collaborated with
Thundercat, Earl Sweatshirt, Anderson.Paak, Ariana Grande and more since meeting in 2018. Not Tight
is the duo’s hotly anticipated debut album.
The album may be titled Not Tight, but Domi and Beck are a ridiculously in-synch unit. Beck’s drum
patterns skitter and thump like an insanely sped-up Questlove sample. Domi’s keyboards frequently
apply a wash of color reminiscent of the best 1970s fusion pieces. Along the way, the pair get boosts
from several high-profile guest spots.
Herbie Hancock hops on the vocoder for “Smooth,” while Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg and Anderson
.paak all share “Pilot” (which goes a long way in making Not Tight one of the few jazz albums with a
parental advisory sticker). The pair of tracks with Thundercat would be equally at home on one of his
albums. Kurt Rosenwinkel unleashes spidery guitar licks across the aptly titled “Whoa.”
The result is a 45-minute mashup of hip hop, fusion, video game music and R&B that are perfectly
designed for today’s ADD listening environment, but fly past too quickly to unpack over the course of
the record.
At just 21 and 19, respectively, Domi and Beck are already being hailed as the new faces of jazz. They
may well grow into that, but in the meantime it’s fun – if pleasingly disorienting – to hitch a ride on
wherever they want to go. -Joel Francis

Etta James – Hits (180 Gram Vinyl, Gatefold LP Jacket)

The Eagles – Their Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2

Florence + the Machine – Lungs (Digital Download Card)

Fela Kuti – Open and Close, Underground System, I.T.T.
Weekly Reviews:

Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti is almost as legendary for his scathing political activism and the expansive
domestic compound Kuti named a sovereign state as he is for the pioneering Afrobeat music he created,
which combined funk, jazz and West African music. Three new reissues from Kuti’s expansive catalog
show how consistent he was across the decades.
Released in 1971, Open and Close is one of Kuti’s earliest releases. You can hear Kuti moving away from
the big band jazz sound, although the songs aren’t as political as they would later become. Aside from
the 15-minute title track, which describes a new dance, the four songs are very succinct for Kuti, all
clocking in at under 10 minutes. Unavailable on LP since the 1980s, Open and Close is a strong effort,
showing the roots of what would quickly blossom into Afrobeat.
Although I.T.T. appeared less than a decade after Open and Close, Kuti was operating in a different
paradigm. His Kalakuta Republic commune had been raided several times by the government. One of
these raids resulted in the death of Kuti’s mother. Kuti’s politics are razor-sharp, as he calls out the
president of Nigeria, the head of Decca Records and decries British colonialism. The music cuts just as
deep a groove.
1992’s Underground System was the last studio album released by Kuti before his death just five years
later. Although he was 55 at the time of the album’s release, middle age had not mellowed Kuti. On the
28-minute title cut, he blasts corrupt leaders who rule against the will of the people. Kuti’s Egypt 80
ensemble plays with an intensity and urgency throughout the lengthy number. The mostly instrumental
b-side “Pansa Pansa” is similarly brisk. -Joel Francis

Khan Jamal Creative Arts Ensemble – Drum Dance to the Motherland

Weekly Review:

Listening to Kahn Jamal’s lost/underground album Drum Dance to the Motherland is like eavesdropping on conversation between cavemen and space travelers.

Recorded live in a basement coffee house in late 1972, Drum Dance to the Motherland opens, appropriately enough, with a long percussion piece. Jamal’s vibraphone and marimba commune with Dwight James’ drums and glockenspiel and Alex Ellison’s African percussion. The entire performance is bathed in reverb, which adds to the other-worldly experience.

The five-minute “Cosmic Echoes” leads directly into the nearly 14-minute title track. As a clarinet wheezes across a vigorous drum set, one of the band members starts clapping. Briefly, a few others join in. This is free jazz, yes – the clarinet doing an impression of Yoko Ono’s singing is impossible to ignore – but it is also joyful.

“Inner Peace” kicks off side two, emerging gradually before settling into a bluesy funk courtesy of Monnette Sudler’s guitar and Billy Mills’ haunting bassline. Again, the clarinet swoops and dives over the proceedings like a gull trying to snag a meal from the water. “Breath of Life” completes the album with a dreamy, ambient collage.

Drum Dance to the Motherland built a reputation as an extemporaneous, soulful adventure during the more than 30 years it was out of print. Now finally back in print and affordable, intrepid fans of free jazz can examine this work in full glory from the comfort of home. -Joel Francis

Smashing Pumpkins – Gish

Weekly Reviews:

Nineties alternative rock heroes the Smashing Pumpkins have long been a dictatorship run by guitarist,
lead singer and songwriter Billy Corgan, but there was a brief period when the quartet actually
functioned as a band.
The Chicago band’s 1991 debut album, Gish, finds the quartet almost working as an ensemble of equals.
Jimmy Chamberlain’s jazz-influenced drumming makes every track swing, even while rocking out. D’arcy
Wretzky’s strong, fluid basslines anchor the songs beneath Corgan and James Iha’s layers and layers of
guitars.
The band that later delivered hits “Cherub Rock,” “Tonight, Tonight” and “The Everlasting Gaze” is
mostly present on Gish. Opening cut “I Am One” is built around Chamberlain’s swinging drum part and
Corgan and Iha’s muscular guitars. The Pumpkins prove they can do quiet material just as well as the
noisy stuff on the slow-burning “Rhinoceros.”
Later, “Window Paine” is a psychedelic dream, a form the band wouldn’t really touch on again. The
biggest surprise arrives on “Daydream,” the final track. Here, Wretzky takes lead vocals for the only time
on a Pumpkins album, giving the track a bit of a Kim Gordon vibe.
While Gish has many strong tracks – including fan-favorite “Siva” – there aren’t any obvious big singles.
In a way, this makes the album stronger, because it forces all the songs to work together as a whole. It
also kind of seems like a dry run for the Pumpkins’ second album, 1993’s smash Siamese Dream. By

then, Corgan had taken over, meticulously recording all the instruments himself, except for
Chamberlain’s drums. -Joel Francis
