Weekly Review:
It’s hard to grow much of anything with no roots, but Alice Merton can prove otherwise. The 24 year old German/Canadian/English pop star has grown a widespread fan base, sprouted a record label, and harvested her debut album just in time for 2019. It took three years, but Mint is full of hooks and hits. You’ve probably heard No Roots by now, be it on the radio, TV commercial on Spotify (it’s been streamed over 135 million times) or at the Teen Choice Awards (it’s cool, we don’t judge). But songs like Lash Out, Funny Business and Why So Serious prove that Merton is more than one and done.
Merton has claimed 12 addresses in her 24 years on this earth. While the postal codes changed, music was a constant in her life. Whenever she would feel like she did not belong, or felt overwhelmed by all the new she would write songs to make herself feel better. That is one of the most endearing aspects of this album, is how deeply personal it feels. According to Merton the stories on this album are all true, but more than that, each song has a different feel but still sounds uniquely Alice. She branches out, but the trunk of who she is remains the same. No matter if it is the teen anthem Lash Out or the Lana Del Ray like Honeymoon Heartbreak each song is familiar in a way that is relatable, but with a funky bass line. In the world of digital downloads and streaming it’s hard to find an artist that puts out a solid album from start to finish. For Merton, all of her songs on this album are good and more than a handful of them are great.
