Frank Turner – Be More Kind (180 Gram Vinyl)

Weekly Review:

My Pick of the Week was- Frank Turner– Be More Kind- I love Frank Turner and this album is so good! Half anthems making you want to march in the streets and half wanting you to try and see the good in everyone. I predict that “1933” will be this generations “Masters of War”. With lyrics like “Don’t mistake your house burning down for the dawn” and “If I was in the greatest generation, I’d be pissed. Surveying the world I built slipping back into this.” In “Make America Great Again” he asks us to listen to an “ignorant Englishman” and has many suggestions such as “…making racists ashamed again” and “…make compassion in fashion again”. Such good advice. In “Be More Kind” he leaves this beautiful statement, “In a world that has decided that it’s going to lose its mind, Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.” Mr. Turner is a bombastic Brit in the tradition of Billy Bragg, Bob Dylan, and Paul Kelly- incredibly smart lyrics, passion, and hooks that will leaving you humming days later. Highly recommended. In stock now. $25. Sherman

Speedy Ortiz- Twerp Verse (indie only colored vinyl)

Weekly Review:

Speedy Ortiz “Twerp Verse’

Three years removed from the success of their previous album Foil Deer, Speedy Ortiz seemed to conclusively cross over from having been a band beloved by a  relatively few into being a big deal.

The release of Twerp Verse finds the quartet, fronted by Sadie Dupuis and rounded out by Darl Ferm, Andy Molholt, and Mike Falcone, at something of a crossroads: which way to turn? Rise in the shadows of previous work only to step into the bright lights on the big stage or to return to their primary safe place of chordal, melodic, and harmonic intricacy all covered in a layer of fuzz.

It’s clear right from the start that good choices have been made. Every track here packs a punch, from the moment the enigmatic chorus of opener “Buck Me Off” roars in to view with its refrain “I’m in league with the devil/you’d better buck me off/you’d better stop me/better find a way to top me” it feels important that the listener stops doing whatever they were previously doing and air-drums approvingly. On “Lucky 88,” synth lead lines add real potency to Dupuis’ repeated assertion: “I don’t care anymore.” Elsewhere, “Alone with Girls” is a  driving track with layers. There are a couple if songs on the back half that feel like they are trying to hard, but neither distract from where the overall album takes the listener.
