Megadeth – The Sick, the Dying … and the Dead

Weekly Review:

To say a lot has happened since thrash metal pioneers Megadeth’s last album six years ago is putting it
mildly. During that time, lead singer and songwriter Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with and defeated
throat cancer and founding member and bass player David Ellefson was dismissed from his second stint
with the band.
This drama bubbles under but rarely breaks the surface of The Sick, the Dying … and the Dead!
Mustaine’s oncologist helped pen lyrics for “Dogs of Chernobyl,” a high-octane imagining of what may
have happened to the animals left behind after the 1986 nuclear disaster. Thanks to last-minute
contributions from Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio, Ellefson is hardly missed.
Rapper Ice-T stops by to assist on “Night Stalkers,” a first-person account of a black-ops military mission
(Mustaine also got help from an Army veteran on the lyrics). The opening title track deals with the
Bubonic plague, while “Mission to Mars” tells the story of a failed space mission, sans Major Tom.
Mustaine may now be 60 years old, but his signature snarled vocals remain as angry as ever. Drummer
Dirk Verbeuren and lead guitarist Kiko Loureiro (the lone member aside from Mustaine to appear on
Megadeth’s previous album) keep the volume loud and tempos punishing throughout the album’s 12
songs. This unilateral approach can be fatiguing and numbing after a while, but will be cause for
rejoicing among metalheads and faithful ‘Deth fans. -Joel Francis

Pavement – Slanted and Enchanted
Weekly Review:
It’s a little difficult to understate the importance of an album like 1992’s  “Slanted and Enchanted” by the band Pavement, as a defining force in the evolving Indie Rock genre borne of bands as far back as the late 60’s with The Velvet Underground, to the garage bands of the 70’s like the Stooges and MC5, to the more sophisticated pop jangle of the 80’s with REM and the Smiths and even up to the radio friendly  grunge rock angst of the previous year’s “Nevermind” by Nirvana. It’s all in there.
Successful solo artist and defining member of  Pavement, Steve Malkmus is quoted as saying, “I think Slanted and Enchanted probably is the best record we made, only because it’s less self-conscious and has an unrepeatable energy about it.”
Originally formed in Stockton, Californiain 1989 as a studio project of guitarists and vocalists Stephen Malkmus & Scott Kannberg, Slanted and Enchanted, was the only album to feature drummer/ producer Gary young. Upon first hearing the duo’s songs, Young was quoted as saying, “this Malkmus idiot is a complete songwriting genius”.
Perhaps no band better encapsulates the lofi, DIY, energy and slacker mentality of the 1990’s X-Generation than Pavement. The relaxed swagger, crunchy drone guitars and absurd lyrics of “Summer Babe,” the opening track on S&E, is the perfect anti-summer anthem. One can just imagine the sea of drunken disillusioned college students singing along with the infectious end chorus: “Every time I sit around I find I’m shot!”
The dissociative word play of “Trigger Cut / Wounded-Kite at :17” are just what the doctor ordered for the freshman teenager just about to crack open their first Burrough’s novel, while the disjointed, distorted noisings of “No Life Singed Hers” is  the perfect artistic mess needed to impress the goth girl in you English 101 class.
The second half of the beatniky , Velvet Underground, quality of “Conduit For Sale!” (a la “The Gift”) connects to the “Tune In and Drop Out” era of the 60’s cross sectioned with a healthy does of 90’s cynicism.
And of course the “after the party” ballad opening line of “Here” is perhaps the single best line to sum up a generation of all time: “I was dressed for success but success it never comes.”
Matador properly honors the 30th anniversary of this seminal record with beautiful splatter red vinyl and sweet remastering job.  – Major Matt

Third Eye Blind – self-titled

Weekly Review:

It’s been 25 years Third Eye Blind took their tale of meth addiction to the top of the charts. A new
reissue of the band’s self-titled debut album celebrates not only their semi-charmed life, but showcases
why the band continues to be an in-demand concert draw today.
Third Eye Blind the album is front-loaded with five Top 10 singles on first side. Opener “Losing a Whole
Year,” “Graduate,” “Jumper,” How’s It Going to Be” and, of course, “Semi-Charmed Life” were
inescapable on the radio in the late ‘90s, helping propel the album past six million sales. These singles
are marked by huge guitar hooks and even bigger pop choruses. Love them or hate them, these songs
were designed to lodge their way into your head and never leave.
The second side is devoid of any singles and less likely to cycle on repeat in your head, but closes with
the strongest three songs on the album. “The Background,” “Motorcycle Drive By” and “God of Wine”
are all tender ballads rendered on acoustic guitars or slow, shimmering electric guitars. “The
Background” and “Motorcycle Drive By” both explode into something heavier, almost transforming into
emo songs by the end. Album closer “God of Wine” is content to gradually crescendo at the chorus
before dropping back for the verses. These exquisite pieces of songcraft build on each other, amplifying
the mood of heartbreak, regret and loss. They remain eminently relatable, even a quarter of a century
later.
Whether you were there originally or experiencing these songs for the first time, Third Eye Blind’s debut
is a great way to connect with some the ‘90s most infectious alternative rock anthems. But stick around
for the slower songs on side two. -Joel Francis
