In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003
The wait for an R.E.M. hits on vinyl has ended, and it comes just ‘In Time’. There are endless ways to assemble an R.E.M. anthology, but this selection is marvelous. It is not only put together for their best work; it is arranged like an album. You can argue the absence of “Shiny, Happy, People,” but this collection works well together.
Few will doubt that their music is still progressive, shimmering, and hypnotic (living up to their name). Their big hits are innovative and surreal. “Man on the Moon,” “Orange Crush,” and “Daysleeper” are evocative and elicit almost a subconscious response. The selection also gives us a chance to experience their worthy albums firsthand. It hardly seems redundant when one can capture “The Great Beyond,” “Animal,” and “All the Right Friends,” after losing a chance to get them firsthand on an R.E.M. album. They also draw much of their best music. Unsurprisingly, they pull four off of ‘Automatic for the People.’ Furthermore, “Electrolite,” “E-Bow, the Letter,” and “Imitation of Life” provide solid material from albums that occasionally faltered to be heard. From the mesmerizing mid-tempo songs to their expert fast-forward work, ‘In Time’ in one of the most thoughtful collections presented.

The second disc is hardly a memento. The moments are mixed, but very worthy, overall. Their rendition of “The One I Love” unplugged is a completely different song. It is beautiful with a more tender meaning. “Pop Song ’89” nearly does the same, but is a fine, unplugged rendition all the same. Then, we have another chance to hear “Revolution” on vinyl. “Don’t Talk to Me” is another beautifully done number. The other works such as a live version of “Drive”, “Turn You Inside Out,” and “Country Feedback” make nice concert souvenirs for those of us lucky enough to see one of the best concert bands. Other novelties abound. William S. Burroughs doing his–almost literal–reading of “Star Me Kitten” provides some amusement. Their alternate versions of “The Lifting,” “Leave” and “Fretless” are worthy of the originals.

R.E.M is a great band with the wise and persnickety judgment to give listeners a splendid cross-section of their work that is expertly arranged. Get yours today from the best in the biz @ the Vinyl Underground.

Sons of Kemet – Your Queen Is A Reptile

Weekly Review:

Vampire Weekend- Father of the Bride

The years 2013 feels like a lifetime ago. It’s been six years…six years since the Boston Marathon bombing. Six years since Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admitted he smoked crack… Edward Snowden leaked government secrets and Miley Cyrus “twerked” on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. It’s also the last time we had heard from Vampire Weekend.  Arguably the biggest Indie Rock band of the 2000’s, a six year hiatus was not what we expected. We get it, it’s tough to follow up after winning a Grammy. Twenty five percent of your band quits, you play a show for Bernie at a fundraiser, have a baby and here we are, 2019.
Saying their latest release, Father Of The Bride is overdue is an understatement and audiences are reacting as expected, rocketing the album to number one on the Billboard charts. Father is an eclectic mix of music genres exploring Country, Reggae, Lounge, Soft Rock and more. Being down a member, they also branched out to guest musicians. Danielle Haim of the sister trio Haim contributes quite a bit on this album, providing a nice yin to Ezra Koenig yang.
Song Harmony Hall is a major highlight on this album.  It feels as if Koenig was listening to a lot of Paul Simon when writing this song. Symphony hits like a Rodrigo Y Gabriella track, full of rhythmic guitar, clapping and driving. We Belong Together is a thoughtful duet with Haim, it’s a cute love song with vocals that weave in and out like vines on a wall. I think for me what is most impressive, is how all of these songs are done in different musical genres, but they all sound uniquely Vampire Weekend. Pick up a copy of this album, it’s pretty great.

The Velvet Underground – Velvet Underground and Nico (180 Gram Vinyl)

Weezer – Pinkerton
