Weekly Review:

While hair metal bands were applying mascara, liberally applying Aqua Net and loitering on Sunset Strip,
fellow Los Angeles-rockers Redd Kross was released a tidy little throwback filled with power pop, girl
groups and garage rock.
Powered by brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald, Red Kross never take themselves too seriously.
Neurotica’s irreverent lyrics are loaded with references to the TV show “One Day at a Time,” “Jesus
Christ Superstar” and even the country-trucker anthem “Convoy” in an enigmatic shout-out.
But mocking/adoring pop culture would get quickly grow tiresome if the music wasn’t so good. From the
power pop of “Peach Kelli Pop” and the Paul McCartney-esque acoustic tune “Love is You” to the
hardcore punk panic of “Pink Piece of Peace” to the girl-group tribute cover of Sonny and Cher’s “It’s the
Little Things,” Neurotica threads the needle from Big Star, through the Replacements and, finally, to the
Pixies.
This new35 th anniversary reissue of Neurotica offers a remastered version of the original 14-song album
and adds a dozen demos on a second platter. These demos show how fully formed most songs were
before the band took to the studio, effectively serving as an alternate, rawer version of Neurotica. -Joel Francis

Weekly Review:

With a catalog of songs about grief, illness, heartbreak and depression, few would expect Soccer
Mommy to turn out the feel-good hit of the summer. Yet the group’s third album manages to sound
sunny despite its melancholy.
Sometimes, Forever, finds Soccer Mommy figurehead Sophie Allison working with producer Daniel
Lopatin for the first time and with a full band for just the second time. The result is an album that retains
the heart of Allison’s bedroom pop beginnings, but with the shading and textures of her influences. The
guitars on “Don’t Ask Me” wail like a Dinosaur Jr track, while “Darkness Forever” evolves into a powerful
slab of shoegaze over its last 90 seconds. Electronics and synthesizers mark several songs, adding
another arrow to Allison’s already formidable quiver.
Lyrically, Allison still mines the same fertile soil. “My will is gone and I don’t feel a thing,” she sings on
the numb, minimalist song “Don’t Ask Me.” On “Shotgun,” Allison marries a story about an obsessive
love with an arrangement recalls the Breeders during the verses and Slowdive on the chorus.
Soccer Mommy have never sounded better than they do on Sometimes, Forever, which is good news for

Tyler the Creator – Call Me If You Get Lost

Weekly Review:

Less than a second after Tyler the Creator starts the opening verse on his seventh album, we hear the
voice of DJ Drama. With a persona so bombastic it makes Busta Rhymes look shy in comparison, Drama
dominates the first third of the album. Drama’s voice repeatedly booms over the tracks, giving Call Me If
You Get Lost the feel of an early ‘00s mixtape, but also blunting Tyler’s rhymes and vibes.

It’s a shame, because Call Me If You Get Lost contains a great balance between vulnerable and playful.
The 16-track album centers around two songs, the nearly 10-minute “Sweet/I Thought You Wanted to
Dance” and the eight-minute “Wilshire.” On “Wilshire,” Tyler documents the battle between his head
and his heart when he finds himself attracted to a friend’s lover. We hear him anxiously, nervously
fluctuate between the two extremes, unable to find peace of mind.
But there are plenty of fun moments as well. Tyler and Lil Wayne are having a ball on “Hot Wind Blows”
and “Wuxyaname” with Ty Dolla $ign and Young Boy Broke Again is a jam.
Six years after the end of the Odd Future collective, Tyler continues to show such growth and depth as
an artist that it is hard to reconcile his recent work from his early, immature shock rap. Call Me if You
Get Lost continues the hot streak Tyler started with 2017’s Flower Boy, even if DJ Drama tries to capsize
