Weekly Review:

Achtung Baby by U2

After a very successful tour supporting “The Joshua Tree” album and releasing a documentary film entitled “Rattle And Hum”, the band U2 found themselves at a creative crossroads, unsure of how to progress beyond their interpretations of Americana and the music they grew up on.

Enter “The Fly”, an engineer named “Flood”, and the band that was once in flux demands your attention with the 1991 release of “Achtung Baby”. The opening notes of “Zoo Station” are a heavily distorted guitar accompanied by an equally distorted drum pattern – a complete 180 ° turn from what fans were used to hearing from U2. So complete, in fact, a lot of consumers were trying to return/exchange their initial CD copies believing their copy was faulty or skipping! “Hey baby, hey baby, it’s alright, it’s alright…you can turn it up!”, assures Bono.

Even the lyrics took a turn from preachy rants to introspective explorations of relationships, love, betrayal and sexuality. And while the lyrics turned inward, the instruments – microphones included – were mostly in-your-face loud, often distorted, and borderline industrial sounding. Introducing dance-beats and the group’s use of technology in the studio infused a very different sounding U2 offering and a much needed invigorating overhaul.

This record contains 12 tracks and practically plays like a “Greatest Hits” album. “Even Better Than The Real Thing”, “One”, “The Fly”, “Mysterious Ways”, and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” were all singles that charted.Singles aside, the album as a whole is a cohesive embodiment of fresh ideas and a pivotal break from what they had done before, resulting in over 18 million copies sold worldwide.

I believe this 2018 2LP reissue will increase that number, and I am glad the label decided to span this album over 2 discs instead of just one. Reason:  there is so much bass on this album it requires 2 discs to properly allow the bandwidth needed to translate the thunderous rhythm section of Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen Jr, it would have been criminal to reduce these tracks to a compressed single vinyl copy. That fact alone makes this a highly anticipated reissue from U2’s discography . . . . .
it has my attention!
