Alice Coltrane – Ptah, The El Daoud

Weekly Review:

If you know anything about Jazz it’s more than likely when you hear the name Coltrane, the surname John comes to mind.
More than any other Jazz musician, John Coltrane was responsible for delivering Jazz from the hard bop of the 1950’s through a more model style and eventually splitting the game wide open to becoming the comprehensive and diverse musical genre that it is today.
The scope of what jazz encompasses makes it almost impossible to define. One of it’s most powerful trends is it’s connection to the presence of improvisation with a higher spiritual power.
In Dec. of 1964 John Coltrane famously fused spirituality and jazz through his album: A Love Supreme. What many may not know is that his wife Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, a jazz pianist and harpist in her own right, was a important influence on that work.
After her husbands death in 1967 Alice would pick up the mantle of what would come to be known as “spiritual jazz” and fused it with her own passion for Eastern mindfulness practices and Egyptian mythology.
“Ptah, The El Daoud” is Alice Coltrane’s third full length studio album. It was recorded in the basement of her house in Dix Hills on Long Island, New York in 1970. All the compositions were written by her.
Coltrane composed “Ptah, The El Daoud,” and its predecessors, A Monastic Trio(1968) and Huntington Ashram Monastery(1969), partially out of grief for the death of her husband, John, who died of liver cancer in 1967.
The title track is named for an Egyptian god, Ptah, “the El Daoud” meaning “the beloved”. The second track on “Ptah…” is titled “Turin’s & Ramakrishna.” “Turiya”, according to the liner notes, “was defined by Coltrane as “a state of consciousness — the high state of Nirvana, the goal of human life”, while “Ramakrishna” was a 19th-century Bengali religious figure and also denotes a movement founded by his disciples.
Coltrane famously utilized two of her favorite Sax players: Joe Henderson, considered a more technical player and the more experimental, Pharaoh Sanders
Throughout the album Sanders is recorded on the right channel while Henderson is on the left. Coltrane noted: “Joe Henderson is more on the intellectual side, while Pharoah is more abstract, more transcendental.”
This album poses a nice balance of the flowing and the concrete… shadow and light, weight and lift.
I hear a lot of Alice Coltrane’s influence in some of today’s more popular contemporary Jazz artists like Shabaka Hutchings and Nubia Garcia.
For those wanting to explore the work of this important figure in the late modern Jazz period I can’t think of a better jumping off point. – Major Matt

Collective Soul – Vibrating (Blue Vinyl)

Weekly Review:

It’s been more than a quarter-century since Collective Soul placed the hits “Shine” and “December” in
regular rotation on the radio. The Atlanta-based quintet built around brothers Ed and Dean Rolland and
bass player Will Turpin have kept busy since then, releasing a single with Elton John at the turn of the
century and gaining prominent placement on American Idol and in the Twilight film. Last summer, the
band released its 11th studio album, Vibrating.
Lead singer and songwriter Ed Rolland shows he still has the ability to write a sticky chorus on songs
“Reason” and “A Conversation With.” Many of the ten tracks are built around hard guitar riffs that could
inspire a mosh pit in concert, but have been carefully buffed and polished in the studio. Placed together,
these harder-edged verses with pop-sweet choruses make for a disjointed listen. Singer Ed Rolland
doesn’t have great range, but his voice is oddly comforting and mostly manages to bridge the diverse
styles within a song.
Collective Soul aren’t reinventing the wheel. As they enter their fourth decade in the music business, the
band clearly know what works for them. They wisely play to their strengths on Vibrating. The results will
please their loyal fanbase and provide the parents who grew up listening to Collective Soul a safe
listening experience with their kids, passing the band on to another generation. -Joel Francis

Primus – Primus & The Chocolate Factory with The Fungi Ensemble (Limited Edition, Gold Colored
Vinyl, Gold Foil O-Ring / Jacket)

Weekly Review:

Primus sideways sense of humor and flair for both the theatrical and experimental made a track-by-
track revision of the classic Charley and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack seem like the perfect project.
That 2014 album is finally – and belatedly – arriving on vinyl.
Bandleader Les Claypool’s unusually style of bass playing is equally rooted in both Bootsy Collins and
Frank Zappa and has no problem referencing all points in between. Claypool clearly delights in his role as
Willy Wonka, bringing out the darker, sinister elements in the material. Where “Pure Imagination” was a
delightful daydream in its original version, here it is something closer to, if not a nightmare, definitely an
ominous warning.
Backing Claypool are Primus’ original drummer Herb Alexander, in his first appearance on a Primus
album in nearly 20 years and longtime guitarist Larry LaLonde. The Fungi Ensemble, comprised of Kansas
City-based vibraphonist Mike Dillon and cello player Sam Bass, add even more unusual textures to the
tracks.
Because Claypool and company are working off other people’s songs, Primus and the Chocolate Factory
isn’t quite as unhinged as a standard Primus composition can get. That said, it is plenty weird and should
please both fans of the band, the movie and underground culture. -Joel Francis

Thick – Happy Now

Weekly Review:

The second album from Brooklyn indie rock trio Thick is an infectious and empowering burst of joy
buoyed by scuzzy guitars, lo-fi production and jubilant singing.

Many current female-fronted bands – from Beach Bunny and the Beths to Wet Leg and Illuminati Hotties
– effectively utilize the distorted din of guitars that mark many of Thick’s tracks. Tag-team/harmony
vocals from guitarist Nikki Sisti, bass player Kate Black and drummer Shari Page make Happy Now stand
out in the buzz bin.
Thematically, Happy Now has almost as much self-empowerment and positivity as a Lizzo album. The 11
songs touch on the difficulty of finding validation (“Happiness”), the importance of finding value in
yourself (“Loser”), wishing you could reassure your younger self (“Tell Me”). On standout track
“Montreal,” a giddy-in-love Sisti sings “I want to know you with gray hair.”
While moments of doubt and self-loathing dot the album, Happy Now lives up to its title. It’s a lot of fun
on the turntable and should be even more fun in concert. -Joel Francis
