Hayes Carll – What It Is
Hayes Carll is back with his southern drawl and his sixth studio album. Rebounding from his last album of heartbreak and divorce, we begin to see Carll finding his way back to the sarcastic Texas troubadour that we have come to love. Carll has perfected the art of storytelling in a way that sounds different yet familiar. His music breaks in unexpected places, accentuating parts of the song that would normally get overlooked. Take the song Jesus and Elvis, “Lola built this joint in ’67 / And her boy went off to fight on Christmas Eve In a war nobody won, She lost her only son / Now everything he loved is what you see… Jesus and Elvis.” The break between what you see and Jesus and Elvis rips your heart out, and then mends it all in a few short seconds. Though I’ve never been to the bar with the “velvet paintings of Jesus and Elvis,” I’d give it five stars on yelp for the decor alone.
Right out of the gate we get the song None’ya. None’ya is a tribute to fiancee Allison Moorer. A talented singer/songwriter in her own right, she plays the key inspirational role in this saga of love and disbelief. Carll weaves a tale of always being surprised by his muse and the crazy things she does or says, but embraces and loves every minute. He’s starstruck in all the right ways, even if the only answers he gets from his love is None’ya.
Times Like These is a driving dance hall ditty that gets the toe tapping. It’s catchy as hell and evokes the feelings of the Stray Cats classic Rock This Town. In that sense, it’s not unique, but the way Carll strings together the words like boxcars on a train “I wanna do my labor love my girl and help my neighbor while I keep a little hope in my dreams… but it’s sure getting hard, brother, in times like these” will keep you humming all afternoon long.
As in any good Americana/Country albums, there are songs about heartbreak. Be There, the title implies with much hope that she will be there, but in this case, she has leaving in her eyes, and Carll faces the tough reality that she won’t be there… There are tender moments, songs like I Will Stay, which showcases Carll’s softer side. It’s beautify written, with fingerpicked guitar and the promise that unlike the others, he will stay.
This album was recently back ordered, and for very good reason. It’s a great album, with a unique mix of songs that are all enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend you grab a copy while you can. You are going to want an album like this in Times Like These.

If you are new to Record Store Day or are 12 for 12, here is some info you need to know. There are three different types or releases on Record Store Day. In this edition, we are going to focus on the Record Store Day Exclusive Releases. What’s an exclusive release? Well… these are titles that are exclusive to Record Store Day. That means if you want them in this format (color variant, artwork, etc.) grab them if you can as there is no guarantee you will find them in this format again (except on eBay, for higher than reasonable prices).
This years exclusives is chalk full of goodies that should satisfy nearly everyone. There are titles from superstar artists like The Rolling Stones, Prince, The Ramones, Elvis and Pink Floyd. There are offerings from Weezer, Courtney Barnett, Broken Social Scene and Anderson.Paak and so many more. I’ve listed out some of the highlights for me, what are you looking for?
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – E. 1999 Eternal
Never before “officially” pressed on vinyl, this 2000 copy limited edition first pressing is sure to get some attention. It’s sold more than six million copies since first being released on Ruthless Records in 1995. Produced by Eazy E, this is a must have for any hip-hop collector or fan.
Frank Black – Self Titled and Teenager of the Year
Dreamed of picking up Pixies frontman Frank Black’s solo albums? Dreams do come true and this is your chance. His debut album, Frank Black is getting an orange vinyl pressing, while his second album, Teenager of the Year is 2 x LP and will be pressed on white vinyl. Imagine how good Headache will sound on wax… my head hurts just thinking about it.
Anderson East – Alive in Tennessee
Anderson East in concert is something everyone should experience. You’ll probably get a chance to see him in KC again soon, but until then this live album will be the next best thing. Recorded at his sold out show at the world famous Ryman Auditorium, this double LP limited edition release will hit RSD Shelves first, and then streaming services in May. Grab your copy before gone – no word on how many will be pressed.
My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade is Dead
If you liked the album The Black Parade like I did, then you will want to keep an eye out for this live versions. Recorded in Mexico City in 2007, the theatrics on stage signified the death of the bands onstage personas, effectively sweeping up after the parade was over. Brand new to vinyl, this limited edition, 2x lp will feature 3 bonus tracks plus the death certificate from the original release. BONUS: Liberty, Missouri’s own James Dewees plays piano/keyboard on the album, so support local…
Pink Floyd – A Saucerful of Secrets
In 2018, Record Store Day released a mono copy of the debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. As a followup – 2019 is getting Floyd’s second album, A Saucerful of Secrets repressed in a 180 gram, mono offering. This is the last record that had a contribution from co-founder Syd Barrett. The 2018 copy turned out really well, so I would anticipate this one to follow suit. At 6500 copies it should not be hard to find, but I would not sleep on it if you are interested.
Robyn – Body Talk
The fact that Robyn is not a super mega star is a mystery to me. Her ability to craft perfect pop songs could not be more evident on her 2010 release Body Talk. This album has been hard to find for a while now, so a repress is long overdue. Check out tracks Dancing On My Own and Call Your Girlfriend. 2500 copies shouldn’t leave anyone disappointed but given the demand and the 1200 people on discogs that have indicated they “want it” this one might move quick.
The Bird And The Bee – Rayguns Are Not Just For The Future – 10th Anniversary Edition
This album has been on my list for a long time and has remained unattainably expensive. Best described as jazz-influenced electropop, this LA duo consists of five time Grammy Award winning producer and multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin and uber talented vocalist Inara George. Ray Guns will have 2,000 pressed, but only 1,999 will be available to the public, I need to snag a copy first. -Brad Simmons
