The Comet Is Coming – Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam
Weekly Review:
Perhaps no other artist has done more to energize and influence the contemporary jazz scene than British jazz musician, composer, and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings.
Hutchings minimalist rhythmic style can be detected throughout the plethora of projects. His first recordings were with the incendiary modern Afro-Caribbean based jazz group Sons Of Kemet which soon garnered  Best Jazz Act at the 2013 MOBO Awards.
The Comet is Coming is a trio consisting of Hutchings on sax as well as fellow London jazz scene artists Danalogue and Betamax. Their latest album: Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam has just been released on Impulse. The band  incorporates elements of jazz, electronica, funk and psychedelic rock.
To understand Hutchings’ signature style one must go no further than his origins. Born in London, from the age of six he was raised in his parents’ native country of Barbados.
As a nine-year-old, he picked up the clarinet and practised along to the hip hop legends like Nas, Notorious BIG and Tupac, as well as the traditional rhythms that surrounded the harvest festival of Barbados: Crop Over.
The Comet is Comingis essentially Hutchins’ EDM project and Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam is the groups best effort yet.
The opening track is a hard driving Night Rideresque techno track with a stabbing two note delayed sax pattern that serves as much as an additional persuasion part as a melody.
Most of the tracks that follow center around dance rhythms infused with synth voiced bass lines while Hutchings’ syncopated saxophone weaves in and out like a shooting star through an intergalactic obstacle course.
The albums halfway point, Frequency Of Feeling Expansion Beam, feels like a trip through another dimension that ends with a pulsing elephant stomp of dark unknowns and gravitational forces.
Angel Of Darkness, is perhaps where the album descends into its darkest or most free, depending on your perspective. It’s a near seven minute track of swelling cymbals and distant squealing saxophone and total drum freak out.
The album finishes strong with tracks ranging from hard house, to drum ‘n bass and acid jazz arena laced with that unique Caribbean sizzle.
If your a jazz fan who loves contemporary dance music this is the record for you. And if you’re already a fan of EDM or House looking to expand your horizons in the jazz arena give this one a listen. -Major Matt

Nduduzo Makhathini – In the Spirit of Ntu

Weekly Review:

Nduduzo Makhathini has been recording for nearly a decade, but it wasn’t until his last album that the
South African jazz pianist started to receive international recognition. On his 10th album as a leader and
second for Blue Note, Makhathini draws on ntu, an African philosophy based on balance with nature,
individual independence and collective cooperation.
As expected, this is not background music. It can be confrontational at times, but also sublime and
beautiful. Female vocalists Omagug (Makhathini’s wife) and Anna Widauer provide two of the album’s
most transcendent moments, on “Mama” and “Re-Amathambo,” respectively. Separated by several
tracks, the pieces become an oasis in the midst of more challenging numbers, such as “Emlilweni.” This
post-bop number, with guest saxophone player Jaleel Shaw, recalls John Coltrane’s spiritual work on
“Senze Nina” is a simmering prayer with a haunting choir based on an anti-apartheid chant that lies
somewhere between meditation and repentance. “Nyonini Le?” recalls Thelonious Monk in certain
passages and finds the piano and sax tugging against taught drumming.
In the Spirit of Ntu is a landmark release that searches through the remnants of tradition for a path to
the future. It’s a powerful, spiritual journey that rejects passive listening and both changes and
challenges the listener with each play. -Joel Francis

Princess Chelsea – Everything Is Going To Be Alright

Weekly Review:

New Zealand indie-pop singer Princess Chelsea has branded her fifth full-length release her “nervous
breakdown album.” In keeping with its optimistic title, Everything is Going to be Alright is more
accurately a 10-song journey through Chelsea’s recovery from breakdown. It’s a vulnerable look at how
Chelsea pieces herself back together.
The album starts and ends with two versions of the title song. The opening rendition is uncertain, built
around a haunting organ line and vocals that sound like Chelsea is trying to convince herself of a positive
outcome. By the time we journey to the end, Chelsea is more confident and comfortable in her own
skin. The closing arrangement reflects this with an arrangement nearly twice as long as the first version,
building up from Chelsea’s voice and organ into a swaggering band performance complete with guitar
Between these poles, Chelsea unfurls a catchy, upbeat melody disguising an examination of abuse
(“Love is More”), a sumptuous slice of chamber pop spiked with Sonic Youth guitar feedback (“I Don’t
Know You”) and delivers an ethereal torch song (“Dream Warrior”).
More than a decade after bursting onto the scene with “The Cigarette Duet,” Princess Chelsea continues
to blossom as an artist. With its intricate, tidy arrangements, Everything is Going to Be Alright feels at
times like the music equivalent of a diorama, offering a myriad of details to get lost in. -Joel Francis
