Limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on crystal clear 180-gram audiophile vinyl. First Utterance is the debut album of the progressive folk band Comus. It was released in 1971, with the opening song “Diana” being released as a single. The album was notable for it’s unique blend of progressive rock, folk, psychedelia, with elements of paganism and the macabre. References to Comus by other bands and artists include Opeth, citing it’s lyrics in album and song titles. Experimental outfit Current 93 also covered “Diana” as the opening song on their 1997 LP Horsey. The cover artwork was drawn in ball point pen by Roger Wootton, lead singer and songwriter of the band. The centerfold artwork was painted by guitarist Glenn Goring.

Ervin Booker – Tex Book Tenor (Blue Note Tone Poet Series)

Following sideman appearances with pianist Horace Parlan in the early 1960s, Booker Ervin cut two stellar Blue Note records as a leader in 1968 including Tex Book Tenor which had to wait nearly 40 years until 2005 for it’s first standalone release. With a sleek post-bop quintet featuring trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Jan Arnet, and drummer Billy Higgins, the Texas-born saxophonist slices through a set of compelling bandmember originals including Barron’s sinuous tune “Gichi” and Shaw’s lilting waltz “In a Capricornian Way,” as well as Ervin’s lovely ballad “Lynn’s Tune” and the hard-swinging “Den Tex,” named for his hometown of Denison.

Idles – Tangk (Indie Exclusive, Pink Clear Vinyl)

TANGK is a bona fide pop record in a way we’ve never heard from Idles before, that is, something for everyone to pass around and share, communal anthems intended for overcoming our grievances. The word – pronounced “tank” with a whiff of the “g” – began as an onomatopoeic reference in-studio for the sound of a guitar tone, but has grown into a sigil for living in love. Joe sings on TANGK in a way we’ve never heard before, completing his transformation from post-punk firebrand into soul singing evangelist. TANGK was co-produced by Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats, and Idles guitarist Mark Bowen.

Incubus – Make Yourself

Incubus – Morning View

Iron Maiden – The Number Of The Beast

J Mascis – What Do We Do Now (Clear Purple Colored Vinyl)

Jackie McLean – Action (Blue Note Tone Poet Series)

Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean’s 1960s output ran the gamut from hard bop to the avant-garde with his 1964 post-bop dates It’s Time! And Action splitting the difference. Trumpeter Charles Tolliver had appeared alongside McLean in the horn frontline on It’s Time! And returned once again for Action the next month, with McLean opting for Bobby Hutcherson’s vibraphone in place of piano, as well as Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The albums leaps out of the gate with McLean’s searing title track followed by two pensive Tolliver originals: “Plight” and “Wrong Handle.” On a highly original version of the standard “I Hear a Rhapsody” the melody is answered by discordant interjections from the horns before the album comes to a close with McLean’s grooving minor key piece “Hootnan.”

Jahari Massamba Unit – Yhwh Is Love

Madlib and Karriem Riggins are Jahari Massamba Unit, a collaboration between two beacons of modern music joined by an unwavering passion for pushing the boundaries of traditional music. Beginning as a genuine friendship and mutual admiration for one another’s craft, Jahari Massamba Unit became a project with no rules or guidelines. The result is an extraordinary fusion of creativity, an embrace of artistic freedom, and a testament to what music can be when given the chance to roam beyond convention.

Lost Demos by Linkin Park is a 14-track compilation of fully realized songs and works in progress that were recorded before and during the sessions for their landmark second album Meteora. Although the release title includes the word ‘demos’, the first three tracks are songs that were completed during the Meteora recording sessions but were not included on the final album. “Lost” was released to promote the Meteora (20th Anniversary Edition) and became a hugely successful single globally. Fan favorites “Fighting Myself” and “More The Victim” round out the trifecta of unearthed studio treasures.

Ministry – Hopiumforthemasses (Green Yellow Splatter)

Regimes rise and fall. Stars shine and fade. Trends come and go. Ministry lives on. The six-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated multiplatinum juggernaut founded and fronted by Al Jourgensen has seeped through the darkest corners of popular culture and infected the mainstream for over four decades, gleefully spewing sonic bile between the cracks of the system’s facade. Born in the eighties, they survived the nineties, weathered the turn-of-the-century, and even held on through a Goddamn pandemic. However, Ministry shows no signs of stopping or slowing down-even for a breath. Instead, the band cranks out another blast of anthemic industrial metal on it’s 2024 opus and sixteenth full-length LP, HOPIUMFORTHEMASSES.
