It’s Sonny Clark New Vinyl Thursday at The Vinyl Underground at 7th Heaven. Check out this week’s list of new vinyl arrivals:

Weekly Review:

Lili Trifilo is a gifted songwriter, but producer Sean O’Keefe, who has worked with Fall Out Boy and
Motion City Soundtrack, does her no favors on Beach Bunny’s second album.
In the past, Beach Bunny occupied the same sonic territory as the Beths, Kansas City’s own Greeting
Committee and Bleached. Trifilo’s bared her songwriting soul over jagged guitars and indie rock jangle
that originated somewhere near Weezer’s Pinkerton album.
On Emotional Creature, O’Keefe has sanded any rough edges smooth and placed Trifilio’s songs under a
sheen of smooth production that places the band in the same bland aural territory as Michelle Branch
and Demi Lovato. This is understandable, because Branch and Lovato are playing bigger venues and
getting played on commercial radio stations. If that’s what Trifilio and Beach Bunny want, more power
to them.
But it’s also a shame, because the songs Trifilio wrote during the pandemic for Emotional Creature,
songs mainly about the rush of adrenaline, uncertainty and clumsiness that comes with a new crush, are
worthy of so much more than the generic sheen O’Keefe glazes over every track.
In a perfect world, Beach Bunny, Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail would all be rubbing elbows in playlists
and onstage. Instead, Emotional Creature’s dozen solid songs are diluted for mainstream consumption.
Beach Bunny’s talent is still there. Let’s hope they find the right vehicle next time. At the band’s current
rate of releasing an album or EP every year, we hopefully won’t have to wait long. -Joel Francis

The Dream Syndicate – Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions

Weekly Review:

The Dream Syndicate is one of the most notable bands to come out of the Los Angeles, Paisley Underground scene of the 1980s.

While many bands of the era claimed acts like The Byrd’s, The Mama’s and the Papa’s, and The Doors as strong influences, The Dream Syndicate leaned more towards the intricate wordplay of Bob Dylan fused with the edgy guitar hooks of The Velvet Underground.

Despite being at the forefront of the genre the band never quite reached a sustainable success and dissolved in 1989.

In 2012 frontman Steve Wynn reformed the band for a festival show in Barcelona and has been releasing new studio albums under the moniker ever since.

2020’s, “The Universe Inside,” the bands seventh studio album, was a surprise hit with many critics including yours truly.

American Songwriter claims: “The Trippy ‘Universe Inside’ is Not Your Father’s Dream Syndicate Album.”

The album’s extended improvisational jams have more in common with Krautrock legends Neu & Can than anything The Buffalo Springfield ever produced.

The band’s most recent album: “Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions,” on Fire Records, picks up where “Universe…” left off and infuses it with a healthy dose of Bowie “Berlin Trilogy” era production. Some of the rough edges have been smoothed out much in the way Brian Eno uses the studio to create music that is both driving and atmospheric.

The opener “Where I’ll Stand” starts off with a very Spaceman 3 type synth loop that erupts into a heroic guitar groove. Wynn clumsily declares:

“I’m alive but I’m falling

Where the ground split wide

I’m all right but I’m wondering

What’s on the other side”

“Beyond Control” is a dreamy rocker reminiscent of the last sampling by the band War On Drugs, while “Chronicles Of You” displays a kind of speak/ sing technique that reminds me of Michael Stipe in some those middle period REM albums.

Though the band seems to have abandoned the ten and even twenty minute long jams for more traditional song lengths, there are still plenty of four and five minute chilled out wanderings like “Hard To Say Goodbye,” which displays some lovely glacial pedal steel guitar work.

“Every Time You Come Around” is a quintessential 80’s new wave pop love song reminiscent of early New Order and Psychedelic Furs, while “My Lazy Mind” is a dark brooding piece much in the vein of Nick Cave or even Leonard Cohen.

“Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions” exemplifies a substantial amount of growth even from 2020’s “Universe Inside.” Pick your cliche metaphor (wine, cheese, cast iron skillets), as far as I’m concerned, The Dream Syndicate seem to just keep getting better and better with age. -Major Matt

Weekly Review:

Three months after dropping the electric guitar freak-out Fear of the Dawn, Jack White is back with a
gentler, acoustic release, Entering Heaven Alive.
The unabashed romance that appears throughout the album makes it hard not to think about White’s
recent onstage wedding. On “Help Me Along,” White asks “If I help you all along, will you try to forgive
me? Holding your arm as I follow your lead.” Later, on “Queen of the Bees,” White slyly flirts, “Let’s take
a stroll to the end of the street/Put your hand in my pocket so the neighbors can see.” The cumulative
effect makes Entering Heaven Alive the happiest album White’s catalog.
Sonically, Entering Heaven Alive is painted with acoustic guitars, fiddles, pianos, soft organs and gently
brushed drums. It’s a sound White has mastered in his previous incarnations with the White Stripes on
“I’m Bound to Pack it Up” and “As Ugly As I Seem” and on “Thoughts and Prayers” performed by the
Raconteurs, another of White’s bands.
While much of Entering Heaven Alive is familiar territory, White displays a few new wrinkles. “I’ve Got
You Surrounded (With My Love)” features jazz piano bubbling under pinched electric guitars. That jazzy
vibe continues on the swinging “Queen of the Bees.”
Whether it’s the brother-sister ruse of the White Stripes, male and female backing bands on an early
solo tour or the LP that played at three speeds with inside-out rotation and a hologram on one side,
White’s music is always tied to a gimmick. The dual acoustic/electric albums might be the latest
gimmick, but ultimately, it’s a satisfying one. -Joel Francis
