Bleached – Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough?

Weekly Review:

LA Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin are no newcomers to the music business, nor is this the first album put out by their band Bleached. It is, however a new beginning, a fresh start as this is the first album they have released since both finding sobriety. In many ways it’s the same band, but the new album Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough? expands the sound in unexpected ways. For one, there is more of an 70’s funk/80’s new wave sound to many of the songs on this album. Songs like Hard to Kill, Somebody Dial 911, and Kiss You Goodbye could all have a home on the Stranger Things soundtrack. Intermixed with those modern nods to nostalgia are those more traditional Bleached songs, the one that have that punk/low-fi edge. The ones that sound like they were written in a garage in LA, that evoke the feeling of Weezer’s Blue Album. Songs like Heartbeat Away, Awkward Phase, and Daydream are thick with fuzz and power cords. The combo of the two styles of music forms a perfect blend of songs that should be in the running for best rock album of the year.
Hard to Kill is a mix of Duran Duran’s Rio and Paramore’s Hard Times. It’s an 80’s influenced jam that is the perfect blend of punchy bass funk guitar, and that whistling sound from “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” . It’s unexpected coming from this band, but recent tour mates Paramore have made it work on their latest album, and the influence is clear. Somebody Dial 911 evokes the sound of The Cure, “Somebody dial 911 before I fall in love.” Somewhere Robert Smith is forlorn that he didn’t think of it. This sound is not the only nod to The Cure as the aforementioned song Hard to Kill has a line “I don’t care cuz Friday I’m in Love.” Kiss You Goodbye was mined from the same vein, funk guitar, tasty bass riffs and the occasional “HUH” and “HA.” It’s not quite to the level of Kung Fu Fighting but you get the idea.
The final track, Shitty Ballet starts with acoustic guitar and vocals. It sounds like a demo or a recording on a budget. As the song starts to build, it explodes with the intro of drums, bass and electric guitar. The lyricism of this song is great, with lines like “tripping over things that I say, I’m watching a shitty ballet… choking on the words in my mouth, don’t know how I’ll keep them all down.” Both sisters sing in unison “Don’t wanna pretend it’s okay when it’s not.” It feels personal, like the sisters have come to terms with their relationship with alcohol, each other, and the music they create.
Overall this album is fantastic. It’s different, it’s a mix of the same and some very different, but it all works really well. The evolution here is impressive, and I am excited to see where they go from here. Be sure to check them out at the Riot Room on October 1st. – Brad Simmons
