The National – I Am Easy To Find

Weekly Review:

Indie rock mainstays The National have nothing left to prove. The success of 2007’s Boxer, a post-punk revival masterpiece, made the band a critical darling. Subsequent releases grew its diverse fanbase as accolades piled up. Sleep Well Beast, the National’s 2017 release, and a slight diversion from the band’s usual sound, finally won The National a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. Two years later, the band’s new album rollout has been both calculated and surprising, since the release of lead single “You Had Your Soul with You.” A sonic extension of the last record, I Am Easy to Find features a staggering level of experimentation for a band on its eighth album. The album is overall gorgeous, “You Had Your Soul with You” starts us in familiar territory but about 2/3 of the way into the song we find out we’re not in Kansas anymore when Matt Berninger’s voice is replaced by Gail Ann Dorsey’s for part of a verse. It took a moment to get used to another singer on a National album, but only a moment. It’s a beautiful verse I look forward to putting a needle to this cut, especially when Matt reenters the song and their voices blend. I’ve listened to the album multiple times now–it’s hard not to as there’s so much to dig into here. Each time, I’m more and more hooked on it. I can’t imagine liking a song like “Oblivion” as much without the addition of a female voice (in this case, Mina Tindle). With her the song’s on another level–gorgeous and moving. Other tracks feature Lisa Hannigan, a longtime favorite of mine. I have plenty of albums featuring only Matt’s wonderful voice, and I’m sure there will be many to come where he’s back to being the solo singer. I have no problem with them doing something different, especially since they pulled it off so magnificently. Two biggest highlights of the album to me: “Not in Kansas”–hypnotic voice and brilliant lyrics over a style of music you’re only going to get from the Dessner brothers with a wonderful interpolation of Thinking Fellers Union Local 282’s “Noble Experiment”–I could listen to this song all day. “Light Years”–gorgeous piano melody, great lyrics perfectly sung. The National followed a different path and I’m glad I followed them down it. Great stuff. -Albert Schmurr
