Review of the Week:
This Is the Album You Really Need!
It’s very hard to categorize The Heliocentrics’ music. Is it jazz, hip hop, psychedelic, experimental, funk? After all, this youth-focused band from the U.K. has collaborated with so many different kinds of musicians since they first appeared on the scene in 2005; radically diverse musicians like Stage & Screen/R&B artist. Melvin Van Peebles; Ethiopian musician, Mulatu Astatke; electronic/rap purveyor, D.J. Shadow; and more. Just where do you place this band? Let’s face facts, it’s just plain impossible to assign just one genre label to The Heliocentrics.
I have been following this amazing band for some time now, and I have to say, their latest album , 2017’s A World of Masks, is their very finest album (and most accessible) to-date. Never a band to stay too long on any one musical thread, The Heliocentrics – led by drummer, Malcolm Catto – flipped the script this time by adding Slovakian vocalist, Barbora Patkova to the mix. Patkova’s vocals meld with Catto’s percussive effects in unimaginable ways. This stuff is eerily beautiful; it captures your attention like no other album I’ve heard yet this year. If you only purchase one new record this year, do yourself a favor; pick up The Heliocentrics’ A World of Masks. After that, just put it on your turntable, the band will take you where you need to go. Gordo
