Thanks for perusing this week’s New Home New Vinyl Thursday. Here’s some more vinyl news:
Weekly Review:
Soundgarden’s 1994 Album “Superunknown” has a special place in the world of Grunge. It’s not just about the mesmerizing guitar riffs or the thrashing percussion, or even Chris Cornell’s unique voice that sets this album apart from other Grunge bands of the 90’s. “Superunknown”‘s greatest strength lies in Cornell’s lyrics, which upon comprehension exposes a raw openness hidden under the veil of obscurity. Songs such as the captivating eternal hit “Black Hole Sun”, or the ever-catchy “Spoonman”, or even the Title track “Superunknown”, have a sort of dark charm to them as though to encapsulate the cheery side of an existential journey, an ecstatic yet fleeting comfort in lyrical form overshadowed by the anxiety-inducing ambiance that is produced by the haunting wailing of the guitar and the hypnotizing beat of the drums on many a track.
All and all, Soundgarden’s “Superunknown” is quite the experience. Whether you are new to the Grunge genre or a Soundgarden diehard, “Superunknown” is definitely an album that should be in your collection, for no other fact than that its unique sound puts on display the kind of sound that made Soundgarden a force to be reckoned with. – A.
