The Used- The Canyon

Weekly Review:

The Canyon is The Used’s most ambitious album to date.  Ambitious because this 80-minute, 17-track album is nearly twice as long as their six other studio albums. Ambitious because it is without founding guitarist Quinn Allman, a cornerstone of the band. Ambitious because it digs deeper than ever before into the personal lives and experiences of the band. The album explores dichotomy of a place being good and evil, life and death.  Lead singer Bert McCracken opens up about loss and tragedy in his childhood home, telling a tale of two Provo Canyons. One that was full of fond memories of childhood and love, and the other that is full of the loss of his pregnant ex-girlfriend to an overdose and the suicide of his childhood best friend Tregen Lewis.

The record starts out with a conversation, recorded during one of the studio sessions prior to the band recording.  It feels intimate, like you are somehow sitting in on a therapy session.  For you, the albums opening track is an acoustic tale of meeting and missing his childhood friend.  This is a departure from the bands previous hard-rocking first tracks that fans have come to expect on other albums. The tempo picks up with Cold War Telescreen and Broken Widows and the sound feels more real, more organic on this album than of albums past.  This is because of who they worked with, producer Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn, At the Drive-in) and how they worked with him, recording the entire album on tape, without the modern recording tools that often over-sterilize studio albums.

According to Burt, the first half of the record is finding his way through Tregen’s story. “The middle is the absence of God or anything divine. Right before that, Tregen takes his life, and after that, it goes deep into symbology and talismanic representations of systems of government and war — real-life death. It’s a kiss back and forth that makes the record so poisonous.” The Canyon is a difficult album to process as it contains many layers, but the deeper you go – the more meaningful it gets.

Notable tracks – For You, Broken Windows, Over and Over Again and the orchestral Moon-Dream- Brad Simmons

Various Artists – Devil Got My Woman – 16 Classic Blues Songs (colored vinyl)

Various Artists – Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label (2LP)

Yellow Magic Orchestra – Technodelic
