Weekly Review:
The death of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane in the summer of 1967, caught many musicians and fans by
surprise. As with the death of Charlie Parker, another pioneering jazz saxophonist a decade earlier, many
scouted to see who would inherit the fallen legend’s mantle.
Pharoah Sanders’ third album, Karma, established him as Coltrane’s successor. A member of Coltrane’s
final ensembles, Sanders’ playing not only recalled Coltrane’s sheets of sound, but Sanders also infused
his playing with a strong spirituality.
Karma runs 38 minutes, with more than 32 of them given to “The Creator Has a Master Plan.”
Encompassing all of side one and more than half of side two, “The Creator” is a powerful piece.
Surrounded by a French horn player, flutist, two bass players, percussionist, singer and drummer,
Sanders weaves an engaging tapestry that rarely sounds busy or overwhelming. The call and response
between the flute and bass in the opening section provides a laid-back feel.
Part two is a different story. The 13-minute climax of the piece is a tempest of free jazz that is as
confrontational as part one was peaceful. Part two calms down about halfway through, but the yodeling
(Yes, really. No, it’s not as bad as you think.) and sleigh bells refuse to let your consciousness focus on
anything else.
The five-minute “Colors” has the unenviable task of following “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” Leon
Thomas’ vocals take center stage here, creating a moving, hymn-like experience.
Adventurous jazz fans wondering where to go next after late-period Coltrane should definitely head
here. Karma is also a good entry point for those wishing to dip a toe in the waters of free jazz. -Joel Francis

Weekly Review:
First issued in 1951, Genius of Modern Music gathers a dozen of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk’s earliest
recordings. While a title this bold may seem like marketing or hyperbole, it is 100% accurate.
Genius of Modern Music was the Monk’s first LP, and while the songs it contains had been previously
released as singles, it was many listeners’ introduction to Monk. There was no learning curve for Monk.
All of his signature sounds – sideways playing with odd chord progressions and an off-kilter feel – are on
full display.
Furthermore, the majority of the songs here are numbers that Monk returned to time and again
throughout his five-decade career. “Ruby My Dear,” “Epistrophy,” “Well You Needn’t,” “Misterioso”
and, of course, “Round About Midnight.” If these titles aren’t familiar, their melodies certainly are. In
addition to Monk’s numerous adaptations, these songs have been covered by the likes of Sonny Rollins,
Charlie Hunter, Bobby Watson, Tito Puento, McCoy Tyner, Roy Hargrove and literally scores of other
prominent jazz figures.
The compositions on Genuis of Modern Music were incredibly groundbreaking at the time, helping
establish be bop and transforming the genre. Decades later, they are the building blocks of jazz; songs all
aspiring jazz musicians learn and improvise from.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of Genius of Modern Music. Building a serious music
collection without this album is like trying to text on a phone that only recognizes 21 letters in the

THICK – Happy Now
Weekly Review:
THICK is a punk rock trio hailing from New York City. Their aggressive, emotionally charged sound follows in the footsteps of other classic indie acts like Sleater Kiney, Superchunk, and Seether.
Even though the sound consists of a heavy wall of chainsaw driven guitars backed by pummeling drum beats, between the title and provocative cover, “Happy Now”puts feelings front and center with it comes to the subject matter.
Guitarist/ vocalist Nikki Sisti states in the band’s Spotify bio: “Most of our songs lean toward optimism, even when there’s a lot of pain in them.” She refers to THICK’s output as a “living diary.”
“It’s not about toxic positivity or trying to force yourself into happiness; it’s about recognizing that it’s okay to feel a whole spectrum of emotions, and then getting to the other side and really growing from your experiences.”
The album’s first sound is of squealing guitar feed back followed by a classic punk rock “go-go” beat. The sober and direct wisdom of “Happiness” is one THICK’s trademarks:
“Happiness from the outside in
I look around and I breathe it in
It fills my gut but it leaves me thin
Happiness from the outside in”
Similarly to bands like Wet Leg, The Beths, and Momma, THICK is part of a recent wave of new emo driven guitar music, not afraid to flex its reflective feelings muscle.
In the anthemic pop punk chorus of “Tell Myself” the singer wails:
“Used to talk about getting old
Can’t believe all the lies we told then
Used to think about moving on
Can’t believe all the things wе got wrong”
It’s a flip on the youth idolization, “Don’t trust anyone over 30,” perspective. Though not short on youthful exuberance, THICK seem to acknowledge the wisdom that can come with a few years under your belt.
THICK’s secret weapons are its infectious melodies and their ability to seamlessly harmonized with each other. Voices weave in and out sometimes splitting lead vocal duties between multiple members within the same song. – Major Matt

Zach Bryan – American Heartbreak
Weekly Review:
An old adage states that an artist has a lifetime to make his/her first album and only a few months to
make the second. Country singer Zach Bryan had enough songs to populate a few albums. Instead, he
dropped them all on his 34-track debut album, American Heartbreak.
Encompassing more than two hours and spread across six sides of vinyl, Bryan’s introduction has clearly
struck a chord. Since it’s digital release last summer, American Heartbreak has been streamed more
than one billion times.
Bryan is a talented songwriter, able to conjure touching vignettes of blue collar America. His songs are
populated with people who struggle with money or struggle with drinking. They try to forget past
romances and remember every detail of current or prospective beaus. These are not new topics, of
course, but Bryan makes them feel engaging and original.
These strengths, however, tend to blur together across the album. With two exceptions, all of the songs
are between 3 and 5 minutes long. They’re also based around a similar arrangement of jangly acoustic
guitars, upbeat percussion, harmonicas and, occasionally, fiddle or banjo. With no long jams to break up
the pacing or even much of a pause between songs, American Heartbreak races from one cut to the next
with metronomic regularity.
The digital success of American Heartbreak has positioned Bryan as a force in country music with plenty
of staying power. Bryan’s earthy songs mostly made on wooden instruments sound even better on LP.
One of the benefits of records is that the music is broken into smaller pieces to accommodate each side.
This works in American Heartbreak’s favor, making the overstuffed album easier to digest and enjoy.-Joel Francis
