T2 – It’ll All Work Out In Boomland

Weekly Review:

T2- It’s All Work Out In Boomland

The year was 1970 – the dawn of a new decade…and Prog Rock was in it’s infancy with a proliferation of bands such as Atomic Rooster, Can, Curved Air, ELP, Caravan, Genesis…you get the picture. Among these was a lesser known UK trio called T2, with Keith Cross (only 17) on guitar, Peter Dunton on drums & lead vocals, and Bernard Jinks on bass.

In August of 1970, Decca released what would become a very obscure debut from T2 entitled, “It’ll All Work Out In Boomland” – obscure, because the record label themselves pressed a very limited quantity out of spite, not pleased with the rawness of the band’s sound. Over the years, that scarcity – along with the quality of the songs contained – has produced demand for a long overdue reissue.

The album contains only 4 songs that travel far. “In Circles” starts the journey with its hyper-driven psychedelic observation of the circularity of time, with a Yardbirds-esque chorus – “Moving in circles you never quite know where you are . . . ah-ah-ah”. The song’s frenetic pace showcases Cross’ skills on guitar. One quickly forgets he’s only 17 years old.
“J.L.T.” (Jolly Little Tune), the second track, slows things down a bit with its medieval folk feel, and added horns accentuating the outro. Side 1 then ends with “No More White Horses”, probably the heaviest song in tone and substance, taking on the war metaphor with melancholic grandeur leading up to its shattering climax.

Side 2 contains one 21 minute documentaion of an LSD experience simply titled “Mornning”. This multi-sectional song is typical of Prog leanings of the day, yet unique to this power-trio’s brand of musicianship and virtuosity. It is large in scale and definitely a “trip”.

“Boomland” captures a moment in time when a band like T2 wasn’t afraid of exploring musical soundscapes , yet transcends that moment as a well-kept secret just waiting to be realized again . . . and again . . . and again . .
