Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Jean Carne – Jazz is Dead 012

Weekly Review:

The brainchild of former A Tribe Called Quest turntablist Ali Shaheed Muhammad and R&B producer
Adrian Younge, the Jazz is Dead series has been boosting the signal of forgotten legends and generating
lots of great music for more than two prolific years.
Soul singer Jean Carne takes the spotlight for the latest installment of Jazz is Dead. Carne won’t be a
familiar name to many music fans. Aside from a 2007 live record with other artists, Carne hasn’t
released an album since the 1990s. During her heyday in the 1970s, Carne recorded with Philadelphia
International Records and scored several Top 40 R&B and dance hits. She’s also worked with other Jazz
is Dead alumni Doug Carn, Roy Ayers and Gary Bartz.
Carne co-wrote all seven songs on this collection with Younge and Muhammad. Her voice floats over the
Blaxploitation-meets-bachelor-pad vibe Muhammad and Younge have honed so well across this series.
Carne’s voice may no longer have the five-octave range advertised earlier in her career, but she
commands every minute of this album. At 25 minutes, this often feels slight, but since this is more than
Carne has given fans for a quarter century, it should be celebrated with crossed fingers that this is the
start of a rebirth. -Joel Francis

Ghost Funk Orchestra – Night Walker / Death Waltz

Weekly Review:

Six years ago, before Ghost Funk Orchestra was a 10-piece live band blending all funk-adjacent genres, it
was a one-man project helmed by Seth Applebaum. Applebaum’s first two EPs, both released in 2016,
have been remastered and are now on one LP for the first time.
Night Walker was Applebaum and Ghost Funk Orchestra’s late summer debut and the subject of side
one. The atmosphere is drenched in so much echo and reverb that it sometimes feels as if the songs are
being played on a distant, deserted planet. The song titles reflect this aura as well: “Blood Moon,” “Dark
Passage,” “Night Walker.” The nine tracks all hover around the two-minute mark, with just one breaking
three minutes.
Released just four months later, Death Waltz shows a big leap in sonic maturity. The reverb and echo
are still very much present, but the arrangements are more sophisticated, incorporating jazzy horns and
organ. The performances linger a bit longer as well, with one approaching four minutes and another well
past the three-minute mark.
Ghost Funk Orchestra’s unique, enchanting sound has earned them a loyal following. This peek back at
the group’s earliest days displays a crucial part of Applebaum’s evolution that will fascinate longtime
fans and earn them some new ones as well. -Joel Francis

Sharon Van Etten – We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong
Weekly Review:
The title of Sharon Van Etten’s sixth studio album,  We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong,  was taken from a line in the 1993 cult coming of age film The Sandlot. She has claimed to have watched the film nearly 100 times with her son.
At this point the idea of a pandemic record is nothing new but on “We’ve Been…” Van Etten uses it as a backdrop for her typically darkish song craft to create a piece of work filled with great longing and ultimately shades of hope.
Like some of the most powerful works of art,  themes of home, returning and relationships are prevalent throughout the album.
On the opening track “Darkness Fades” she appears to be searching for balance between a place that represents home and some inevitable existential dread. She somehow manages to find that balance within the darkness itself with the lines, “The nights are now, Better stay light,  I’m looking for a way, Darkness fades.”
“Home To Me” appears to be a direct message to her son, asking forgiveness for the time perhaps she spends away while at the same time expressing gratitude for the lessons offered through motherhood.
A palpable restraint up to this point is finally released on track three “…I’ll Try” exploding  into a classic new wave power ballad style reminiscent of 80’s acts like Simple Minds and Spandau Ballet.
“Anything” returns to the darkness while Van Etten poetically accounts the essence of a sleepless night due to depression with the lines “It could’ve been anythingI didn’t feel anything.”
“Darkish” is a moody solo acoustic track that reminds me of some of the cinematic aspects certain  Radiohead  while “Mistakes” is easily the album’s climactic pop hit. It’s bouncy synth line and redemptive chorus seems like the perfect Post post pandemic summer:
When I make a mistake
Turns out it’s great, it’s great, it’s great
I’m much better than that
I’ll admit that it took a while for this one to grow on me but as is the case with most things that require a bit more effort, I’m finding the pay off very satisfying .
Some artists have a knack for taking very personal experiences and blowing them to a cinematic level this making them relatable to the masses. I think this is Van Etten’s secret sauce. We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong  is a compelling snapshot of this stage on her journey. – Major Matt
