Weekly Review:
Upon first glance at the latest effort from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, you would assume this is a greatest hits album, and in a way it kind of is. The 13 track live album spans Isbell’s last three albums, with songs bouncing around between “Southeastern”, “Something More Than Free” and the “Nashville Sound.”
Fun fact, Isbell has now sold out 20 consecutive shows at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Don’t get greedy, this album is comprised of songs from the six most recent shows back in October 2017. Being a “best of” live album it at times lacks the intimate feeling you get from other live albums. There is less chatter from Isbell compared to his time at the Middle of the Map festival in Kansas City, where he was personable and often times funny. The good news is you don’t buy live albums for the banter, you buy it for the music, and he has that angle covered.
With Isbell, his live shows are mix of songs that bring you up only to have your heart ripped out moments later. “Hope the High Road” and “24 Frames” start the album off on a strong footing. The highs are high, with tracks like “Cumberland Gap” and “Super 8.” The lows are low with songs like “Elephant” (my god, “Elephant,” have you heard this song?) and “Last of My Kind.” These songs are ready to break your heart all over again.
While I would have preferred an album that was one live recording of a full show, this is a great collection of live songs by one of the most talented songwriters of our time, and this 2x LP Indie Record Store green vinyl is a worthy addition to any collection.
