Madonna – Finally Enough Love

Weekly Review:

“Vogue.” “Express Yourself.” “Like a Prayer.” Madonna’s biggest hits are so well-known there’s not
much more that can be said about them. To celebrate the 40 th anniversary of her first single, Madonna
presents 16 of her biggest songs in a new, career-spanning collection – with a twist. The tracks on Finally
Enough Love are all remixes.
The silver lining for those who can’t stomach not getting the original versions of these hits, is that these
are all contemporary remixes done at the time each song was riding high on the charts. This isn’t a
revisionist collection, where today’s hottest producers try to shoehorn their sound onto a decades-old
track. In this way, Finally Enough Love showcases not only the evolution of Madonna’s artistry, but the
changing sounds and trends on the dancefloor along the way.
While the versions here won’t replace the more familiar performances, it is interesting to hear the
introspective “Frozen” recast as a four-on-the-floor dance cut. The exotic guitar on “Medellin” ties the
song to its municipal Columbian namesake.
Further complicating matters, many of the remixes here are edited down from their initial lengths on
12” singles and maxi-singles. That might be a bridge too far for purists, but for everyone else, the
cheerful adrenaline of Finally Enough Love will easily get everyone dancing at your next house party
(and help you get it cleaned really quickly beforehand). -Joel Francis

Neil Young & The Restless – Eldorado

Nas – Illmatic

Oscar Peterson – We Get Requests

Prefab Sprout – Steve Mcqueen (Remastered) (180-gram)

Pavement – Slanted & Enchanted (White, Red Colored Vinyl)

Panic! At the Disco – Viva Las Vengeance

Weekly Review:

If Queen’s jukebox musical We Will Rock You hadn’t debuted 20 years ago, Viva Las Vengeance would be
an ideal pitch for the concept. Across the album’s dozen songs, frontman Brendon Urie borrows heavily
from the British classic rock band’s signature layered harmonies of guitars and vocals.
Queen isn’t the only classic rock group on Urie’s mind. He also incorporates Thin Lizzy, Kiss, the Police,
ELO, Cheap Trick and Meat Loaf. The result is akin to spinning a radio dial and landing only on the
euphoric high points of each vintage song.
Clocking in at a tight 44-minutes, Urie’s honed vision is tight, making for some compelling rock theater
that can also be infuriating and annoying. Infuriating because it’s almost too easy to play spot-the-
influence as Urie skates from crescendo to crescendo and annoying because it works so well.
Three albums into Urie’s Panic! takeover from band to solo act, he remains reliably unpredictable and
divisive. While longtime fans are making their displeasure known on social media, Vengeance devotees
should start making plans to see this spectacle on stage, where it will truly shine. -Joel Francis
