Julee Cruise – Floating Into The Night and Floating Into The Night – (Pink Colored Vinyl)

Julee Cruise’s 1989 album Floating Into the Night is a hauntingly beautiful, critically acclaimed work that showcases her unique vocal style and the atmospheric, dreamlike music of composer Angelo Badalamenti. The album was produced by Badalamenti and David Lynch, who had previously worked together on the soundtrack for Lynch’s film Blue Velvet. Today in the wake of both Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti passing it’s important to honor their musical legacy and contribution to both the sonic and cinematic landscapes.

The album is widely regarded as a masterpiece, a definitive moment in the development of the Dream Pop genre, and the unofficial soundtrack to the cult classic television show Twin Peaks. And while the album’s best known song may be the show’s iconic theme song “Falling,” it also contains many of Cruise’s most beloved hits including “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and “The Nightingale.” Each of the album’s 10 tracks showcase Cruise’s ethereal vocals, which have often been described as “angelic” and “otherworldly,” gliding over Badalamenti’s lush, cinematic arrangements, perfectly complementing his combination of retro styles and modern ambience. Her lyrics often touch on themes of love, longing, and loss, adding an emotional depth to the already evocative music. Floating Into the Night was a critical and commercial success, receiving widespread praise for it’s innovative sound and moody, atmospheric vibe. It remains a beloved classic of the dream pop and indie rock genres, and a must-listen for fans of Lynch’s cinematic work and experimental music in general. This magical genre defining and era defying opus has continued throughout time to enchant new audiences and reveal new layers of cultural significance. The music’s juxtaposition between soothing and somber, which have always paired particularly well with Lynch’s psychedelically saccharine worlds filled with underbellies of vast darkness, perfectly straddles the razors edge of humanity, an edge that has become increasingly precarious in modern times. The album is at once a gorgeous romantic narcotic and a bottomless container for fear and sadness.

The Cult – Sonic Temple (Indie Exclusive, Clear Green Colored Vinyl, Anniversary Edition, Gatefold LP Jacket)

Originally released in 1989, Sonic Temple proved to be a pivotal moment for both band and the wider rock scene. Produced by the legendary Bob Rock, Sonic Temple had four chart-topping singles; “Fire Woman”, “Edie (Ciao Baby)”, “Sun King” and “Sweet Soul Sister”. In an interview about the album, Ian Astbury explained how the band brought together hard rock and indie rock to create the unique, game-changing sounds on Sonic Temple. “We wanted to retain our core DNA as we went deeper into psych and hard rock influences. It was a complete immersion for me into art, film, music, poetry and literature, weaving those influences into what was to become Sonic Temple. The band was becoming more popular. We were in uncharted waters. Most of the bands we had come up with had split up or fallen off. We were accelerating. There was no real time to breathe. We were forming new allegiances and breaking the glass ceiling of ‘the indie outsider.'” The album catapulted The Cult into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the US alone, and was declared platinum in 1990. It made it to #10 on the Billboard charts, and the above mentioned songs are all rock-radio staples to this day.

Mosaic Thump returned De La Soul to chart territory again thanks to the hit singles “Oooh.”, and “All Good?”. “Oooh” was nominated for a Source Award and the album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo or Group.

De La Soul – Aoi: Bionix (140 Gram Vinyl, Remastered)

AOI: Bionix is de la Soul’s sixth full length album, released on December 4, 2001. The first single, “Baby Phat” featuring Yummy Bingham and Devin the Dude, was an ode to larger sized women. Elsewhere, “Held Down”, featuring Cee-Lo, found Posdnuos in an introspective mood as he mused on fatherhood, religion, and fame. Slick Rick also made an appearance on “What We Do (For Love)”; a humorous song about puberty and sexual discovery. The album featured skits with a character by the name of Reverend Do Good, which worked as social commentary as well as the intros and outros of the songs. The final Reverend Do Good skit acts as one final advertisement for Ghost Weed as heard on de la Soul’s previous album, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump.

Life’s Too Good is the debut studio album by Icelandic alternative rock group The Sugarcubes. It was released in April 1988 by One Little Indian in the UK and Europe and in May 1988 by Elektra Records in the US. The album was an unexpected success and brought international attention for the band, especially to lead singer Björk, who would launch a successful solo career in 1993. Consisting of veterans of Reykjavík’s early 1980s rock culture, the band took elements of the post-punk sound that characterized the scene, intending to create a humorous take on pop music’s optimism, which is reflected in the album’s title.
