Joe Henderson’s 1966 album, “Mode for Joe,” concludes his impressive 1960s Blue Note series. The album showcases Henderson’s expanded septet, including Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, and Joe Chambers. They deliver six intense performances, notably on Henderson’s “A Shade of Jade,” “Caribbean Fire Dance,” “Granted,” and Walton’s standout title track, a modal masterpiece.

In February 1964, Lee Morgan, after his hit record “The Sidewinder,” recorded the masterful album “Search for the New Land” at Van Gelder Studio. The sextet included Blue Note stars like Herbie Hancock, Grant Green, and Wayne Shorter, with Reggie Workman and Billy Higgins on rhythm. The album features a 16-minute title track and four other original compositions.
