Jimi Hendrix- Both Sides of the Sky (2 LP- NEW studio album!)

Weekly Review:

“I expect most serious Jimi Hendrix fans already know about the 2018 release of Both Sides of the Sky.

This much-anticipated double LP is the last in a trilogy (along with Valleys Of Neptune and People, Hell & Angels) of albums curated with the single-minded purpose of finally presenting all the important unreleased studio recordings remaining in the rock legend’s voluminous unreleased catalog.

Both Sides of the Sky features 13 studio cuts from his 1968-1970 experimental/studio period (including 10 never-before-released).

Ever wondered what Jimi and Johnny Winter would sound like if they played together? Wonder no more; Johnny Winter and Stephen Stills make guests appearances on this Eddie Kramer produced album. I pre-ordered my copy weeks ago. I know I’m not the only Hendrix uber-fan out there. Don’t miss out on this rare release. Get your copy today.”  Gordo

Lights & Earth

Weekly Review:

“Alt-pop artist LIGHTS wanted to take a different approach for her fourth album. She had important messages to share with her fan base, but struggled to share those messages in a meaningful way.  Sometimes the best way to find out who you are is to pretend to be someone (or something) else.  LIGHTS did just that by channeling a alter ego, a fictional character named Enaia.

As Enaia, she felt the freedom to explore topics that went untouched on LIGHTS previous albums. Topics like anger, fighting and sex are topics that push their way onto Skin&Earth.  Enaia is more than an alter ego, she is also the lead character in a six issue comic book series that ties directly into the album.

Skin&Earth is an alt-pop concept album that paired new music to be released with each comic book edition on a monthly basis until the entire album was released. The combination of the album, comics and music videos,  drop you into a post-apocalyptic world devoid of resources and hope. Listening through this lens has added a new dimension to the album that the casual listener would likely not pick up. According to LIGHTS, the album stands on it’s own, as does the comic, but when paired together you start to connect the dots to find there is something so much deeper there.

If the comics are half as good as the album, which is full of radio friendly hits, then the comics sound like a must. Tracks like Skydiving, New Fears, We Were Here, Giants and Fight Club could be in regular rotation on Mix 93 or the Vibe.  Pick up your copy of the record and then plan to stop by the Madrid next Thursday, March 15th and see her live.”

U-Turn Audio- Oribt Plus

Weekly Review:

“I’ve been collecting records since high school, which does not seem like that long ago until I do the math.  It’s been 17 years since I graduated, a fact that still prompts more disbelief than acceptance. During that time, I have utilized a variety of turntables.

My first was a turntable that my brother used in an era when the turntable was considered a rock band instrument.  A direct drive Gemini turntable that has been a solid performer over the past nearly two decades.

My second was a refurbished Pyle that I picked up from Amazon six or so years ago.  It was not beauty, but with a new cartridge it was it brought out sounds I didn’t know existed.
As you can tell, I was long overdue for an upgraded turntable. I had researched the under $500 turntable market and the U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus kept coming to the top of the list.  Combine that with the fact that I had heard good things from record store staff and I was ready to invest.
There were five colors to choose from and my daughter picked the red one.  I try to keep them involved so that one day they might share the same appreciation for music. 7th Heaven included the cue lever, saving me an extra $40 and a few scratches on my records.  Out of the box it felt solid and quickly came together.  The Acrylic platter has some heft to it, which helps with the overall stability and the tracking. The weight on the tonearm was easy to adjust and there is anti-skating build in, which was one less thing to worry about.  I checked the tracking and everything lined up. Some turntables say they are ready to go right out of the box.  Other than adjusting the tracking weight, this one fit that bill.
The sound is colorful and vibrant.  My receiver has a Bluetooth component and there is a noticeable difference between the records and the streaming.  The user experience is simple and the music sounds great.  I am glad I upgraded and based on my experience, I bet you would be too.”
