Charles Bradley – Black Velvet (Limited Edition, Photo Book, Boxed Set, Digital Download Card)
Coheed & Cambria – Unheavenly Creatures (Colored Vinyl, Red, Indie Exclusive, Digital Download Card)
Coheed and Cambria have amassed a fan base that has propelled them to release nine studio albums since 2002. Averaging one album every two years is impressive. Even more impressive is that all but one of the nine albums are concept albums built around the story of “The Armory Wars”, a sci-fi based comic book and story written by lead singer and guitarist Claudio Sanchez.
Like many of the albums that came before it, “The Unheavenly Creatures” is ripe with mesmerizing guitar riffs, massive pop hooks and intricate storytelling. It’s the first of what will be five albums telling the story of a new character named Vaxis, who Sanchez says will be the “father of the new universe.” The pairing with the comic is fun, but not a necessity to understand and appreciate the album. The central themes, even from the band’s name itself are centered around bringing people together, working together to overcome obstacles and loving one another.
The “Prologue” sets up an all out assault of song called “The Dark Sentencer.” This fist pumping anthem sets up the story (and the album) with driving guitars and Claudio’s distinct vocals. Even though it’s masked by the “concept” it still feels deeply personal and real.
The next song (and second single off the album) is “Unheavenly Creatures.” The song opens with a melody that could have been right at home on an 8-bit video game. While it remains part of the under current of the song, it falls victim to the catchy as hell chorus.
With 15 songs and a run time of just short of 80 minutes, this is an impressive first installment. You have no excuses on this one (“I don’t want to catch up… I can’t figure out where to start…”). This is the first of five and if this album is to follow suit to its predecessors, pick up a copy while you can. Copies of their last concept albums are hard to find unless you have a Ben Franklin or two to shell out. – Brad Simmons
