Black Pumas – Black Pumas (Colored Vinyl, Black, Red, Limited Edition)

The first time I heard the song Colors by the Black Pumas I got goosebumps. I listen to a lot of music, so for a song to elicit a physical reaction like that is unusual… In fact, just about everything about the Black Pumas is unusual. Try to believe this… Grammy award winning artist Adrian Quesada is in Austin and is told by his friends about Eric Burton, a local Austin busker by way of California. They meet up, hit it off, infuse hip hop into soul (not the other way around) and deliver on what may be one of the best albums of 2019.

What makes it one of the best albums of 2019? To start, Burton’s vocals are insane. The tone, the inflection, the power are on full display on this album. If this is the level of talent of Austin buskers then some A&R guys job just got a whole lot easier. The album is ten songs, all killer, no filler. Pick a favorite, go ahead. From the opening drum roll of Black Moon Rising to the folky final track of Sweet Conversations. Choosing just one track is an unfair ask.

For me, Colors is my jam. It’s slow burn that really ignites half way in. It’s best at max volume, windows open. An easy top three for me is the song Fire. It pulls a sample straight out of Baby Huey’s song Hard Times.”If there’s a fire, call the fireman, if you’re in pain babe, call the doctor, don’t be afraid to, say I need you, I will understand.” It’s ever so soulful, with an addictive hook. Song Old Man evokes Mavin Gaye in all the best ways. It’s got a What’s Going On?/Piece of Clay vibe that is hard to ignore. Influences come in all shapes and sizes, and if Baby Huey and Marvin Gaye influences are evident, it’s clear we are in good hands.

The producing prowess of Quesada combined with the vocal variety of Burton are a perfect combination. Sheer luck, circumstance or flat out meant to be, these two coming together, no matter how unusual it might be have created something very special. Pick up your limited edition cream with black and red splatter. It looks as great as it sounds. – Brad Simmons
