Dire Straits – Money for Nothing

Weekly Review:

At a dozen tracks and just over an hour, Money for Nothing is a nice gateway to a classic band.
“Money for Nothing,” the song, was inescapable in the mid-‘80s, gathering tons of spins on the radio
and MTV and winning several awards. Its success brought the band a lot of new fans, who turned out in
record number for the Brothers in Arms tour of 1985 and ’86. Money for Nothing, the album, was
released in 1988 as a way to bring these new fans up to speed on the Straits’ back catalog.
Newly remastered, Money for Nothing walks through the English band’s catalog chronologically,
stopping before their final album, which had yet to be released at the time. This isn’t a great loss,
however, because that final album was also the group’s weakest release.
This collection gathers all the Straits’ biggest singles – “Sultans of Swing,” “Walk of Life” and, of course
“Money for Nothing” – along with should-have-been-hits “Romeo and Juliet,” “Private Investigations”
and “Tunnel of Love.” Several of the songs are presented in unreleased mixes or single edits. There’s
also an unreleased live version of “Portobelle Belle.”
Dire Straits’ incredible run from 1980 to 1985 of Making Movies, Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms
are all best experienced as complete albums, but the band’s other albums are fairly spotty, making
Money for Nothing a worthwhile collection for curious fans. -Joel Francis

East Coast – East Coast (Gatefold LP Jacket, Orange, Black Colored Vinyl)

Frank Black & the Catholics – Complete Studio Albums – (Boxset Includes 7LP’s Pressed On 180-Gram Clear Vinyl)

Weekly Review:

After breaking up the Pixies via fax, frontman Black Francis wasted no time starting his solo career. After
several well-received albums released under the Inverted name Frank Black, it was time for a new band,
The Catholics. A new seven-LP box set gathers all six albums Black made with the Catholics, including
three titles appearing on vinyl for the first time.
Spanning the years 1998 to 2003, Black’s work with the Catholics saw him mature as an artist and come
to grips with his legacy in the Pixies. Released in 2002, Black Letter Days is one of Black’s most ambitious
albums. Several songs feature pedal steel guitar and have an Americana vibe that foreshadows Black’s
albums with Nashville session men. On Show Me Your Tears, released in 2002, Black drew inspiration
from talk therapy.
Of course, Black can rock out with the best of them when he wants to, and there are plenty of straight-
ahead driving songs here as well. Dog in the Sand, from 2001, is the best of these, and finds Black
working again with former Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago.
The group’s self-titled debut, 1998’s Frank Black and the Catholics, is so straight-on it gets a little
numbing by the end. Pistola, the next year’s release, corrects the problem by adding more variety to its
listing. Finally, Devil’s Workshop is a companion piece to Black Letter Days. Both albums were released
on the same day, but while Black Letter Days is more rootsy, Devil’s Workshop wants to rock a bit
harder. -Joel Francis

Lizzo – Special (Colored Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

Pop sensation Lizzo’s debut album was a celebration, affirming plus-size bodies, LGTBQ+ lives,
independent women, sass and anyone else who wanted to join the party. Three years later, Lizzo’s
sophomore album doubles down on the same positivity, inclusivity and revelry.
From her profane greeting a few seconds into the album, Lizzo keeps the party turned up to 11 for
nearly all of Special’s brisk 36 minutes. The song “Everybody’s Gay” combines the vibe of Daft Punk’s
“Get Luck” with Gloria Estefan’s Miami Sound Machine. “About Damn Time” leans on Diana Ross’ disco
work with Nile Rodgers.
On “Break Up Twice,” Lizzo quotes Lauryn Hill, while “Coldplay” speeds up and manipulates the vocals
from “Yellow.” The best aural trick on the album happens on “Grrrls,” where Lizzo flips a sample of the
Beastie Boys’ misogynist song “Girls” into an anthem of female empowerment. Special only slows down
across the final few songs, but even those songs are built like Broadway showstoppers.
Special leans on the same themes as Lizzo’s 2019 debut, but with everything that’s happened over the
last three years, it feels almost refreshing to have a place where people are celebrated for who they are,
whoever they are, and encouraged to have fun.
Lizzo doesn’t do subtlety or subtext. There are no hidden layers that emerge after repeated listens.
Instead, Lizzo offers a playground for the id, where all can ride their sugar high without any inhibitions,
like a toddler on a jungle gym. -Joel Francis
