G-20 – Crackdown
Weekly Review:
GA-20 is an electric blues trio originally based out of Boston, Mass. I was first exposed to the band through last year’s explosive tribute to Hounddog Taylor: GA20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!
Their latest release, “Crackdown,” on Colemine Records, has the band stretching their own creative wings this time.  Aside from the croonery rendition of Lloyd Price’s late ‘50s R&B hit, ‘Just Because,” all the songs on “Crackdown” are originals.
Rumor has it the album was more or less cut live at the storied Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts, using Vintage Record  techniques and of course the bands classic instruments and amplifier. The band even takes its name from a classic vintage amplifier.
The first track “Fairweather Friend” sounds like spooky swamp stomp with a haunting chorus of spring reverb drenched “Ohhh’s.” The guitar interplay of Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs is in full effect, revealing one of many alchemies of GA-20: the fact that they have no bass player.
Track two, Dry Run,  settles into and easy going shuffle with a touch of glistening surf guitar on the horizon. Faherty’s vocals delightfully  summon early Steve Miller IMHO.
The title track is the only instrumental on the album. The song is a nasty little groove in the vein of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion meets Link Wray’s: Rumble.
“By My Lonesome” is a smokin’ rockabilly number while “I Let Someone In” is a more laid back Chicago Style blues number lamenting the time when two lovers grow apart.
From The Black Keys to Lightning Hopkins to BB King, this one’s gonna satisfy all the blues fans young and old. – Major Matt

Herbie Hancock – Takin Off (180 Gram Vinyl, Red Colored Vinyl, Bonus Tracks)

Heartbreakers – L.A.M.F. – The Found ’77 Masters (Pink, White Colored Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)

Weekly Review:

The Heartbreakers emerged from the ashes of the glam/proto-punk band New York Dolls around the
rhythm section of bassist Johnny Thunders and drummer Jerry Nolan. Despite building a reputation as a
formidable live act (and nabbing the name Heartbreakers a year before Tom Petty’s band seized the
name), drug abuse undermined the band’s talent and momentum.
When the Heartbreakers’ debut album L.A.M.F. finally dropped in 1977, Nolan was so disappointed by
the album’s quality that he quit the band. A muddy mix neutered the group’s explosive energy. A year
later, when the band’s label went out of business, the original tapes were lost.
Not that there weren’t attempts to sonically improve L.A.M.F. over the years. Using secondary tapes,
the album was remixed in the ‘80s and ‘90s. These attempts were collected with demos and alternate
mixes as the “definitive” L.A.M.F. box set in 2012.
Miraculously, the original master tapes surfaced in the producer’s attic two years ago. Finally, the
Heartbreakers’ lone studio recording can be appreciated in the sonic quality it deserves. This edition of
L.A.M.F. is the musical equivalent of ice bucket challenge, slapping your skull with guitars that draw
blood and roaring drums. -Joel Francis

Miles Davis – The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: That’s What Happened 1982-1985 (White Colored Vinyl, 150
Gram Vinyl)

Weekly Review:

When jazz legend Miles Davis returned to recording and performing after a self-imposed, five-year exile,
it wasn’t to rest on his laurels. Davis quickly adapted to the early ‘80s scene, but for the first time in his
career, Davis was responding to the times rather than advancing them.
A new two-LP set exhumes outtakes from three albums Davis made between 1982 and 1985, his final
works with longtime label Columbia.
The set opens with four outtakes from the 1983 album Star People. Trombonist J.J. Johnson delivers a
rich solo on “Minor Ninths, Part 2,” while Bill Evans steals “Remake of OBX Ballad” with his heavenly
soprano sax.
Material from session for the 1985 release You’re Under Arrest dominate the rest of the collection.
Previously unreleased, alternate interpretations of “Time After Time,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It”
and “Human Nature” are better suited for the shopping mall than the philharmonic hall.
The collection rebounds with several strong performances, including Davis’ passionate reading of “Never
Loved Like This.” Guitarist John McLaughlin rips during the first half of the 10-minute “Katia” and while
the knife fight between Davis’ trumpet and Robert Irving III’s synthesizers don’t reach the same heights,
it’s still compelling. An update of “Theme from Jack Johnson (Right Off)/Intro” is given extra muscle by
guitarist John Scofield and bass player Daryl Jones.
As the most controversial artist to “go electric” since Bob Dylan at Newport, Davis’ catalog became
divisive the moment he plugged in. Listeners able to see past the dated production and arrangements
are treated to many sublime moments, even if they aren’t in the expected places. -Joel Francis
