You know The Dark Side of the Moon. It’s the record your uncle (or great uncle) used to test his new turntable and speakers in the funny-smelling basement. It has sold so many copies that it is estimated that one in every 14 people in the United States under the age of 50 own or have owned a copy.
So why are we still talking about it now? Well, for one thing the album turns 50 years old this March. For another, it’s still really relevant. Finally, it has aged really well and still sounds freaking great.
You know that whole divided country/red vs. blue nonsense? Floyd discussed this on the piano ballad “Us and Them.” The insatiable greed of corporations and billionaires? Check out the lyrics to “Money.” The song “Time” is basically a Calm app long before anyone knew what an app was and only Hari Krishnas and hippies practiced mindfulness.
Then there’s the music. The songs flow effortlessly into each other, creating a continuous listening experience on each side. Dark Side opens with a heartbeat before crescendoing with Clare Torrey’s soulful, wordless vocals on “The Great Gig in the Sky.” Side two opens with the ring of a cash register and ends with songwriter Roger Waters espousing that “everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon” before the track gracefully descends back into a heartbeat.
If you are one of the 13 people under the age of 50 who don’t or have never owned The Dark Side of the Moon, this 50 th anniversary edition is as good a reason as any to pick it up. At least you’ll have something to talk about with your uncle (or great uncle) at the next family gathering. -Joel Francis

Electronic duo Sylvan Esso raised a few eyebrows when they performed their new album at the Newport Folk Festival last summer. It’s hard to know what would be more incongruous: singer Amelia Meath dancing to glitchy programmed drums onstage at Newport, or the gentle acoustic ballad that closes out No Rules Sandy pumping out of a dance club sound system.
Considering Meath is part of the folk trio Mountain Men, the folk elements of No Rules Sandy aren’t entirely surprising. The range of textures and genres attempted on No Rules Sandy isn’t particularly surprising, either. Sylvan Esso’s previous three albums have all been fairly broad reaching, although not as broad as this. What is surprising is how well everything hangs together, especially given the album’s concise 35-minute runtime.
Upbeat lead single “Sunburn” uses a bicycle bell to add color to a lo-fi synthesizer part that sounds like it could have been made on a phone (in a good way). A thirty-second collage of found sounds from around the pair’s North Carolina studio are all it takes to link “Sunburn” to “Alarm,” a song that starts with what sounds like a thumb piano before building into an elastic synth line.
Meath and producer Nick Sanborn recorded No Rules Sandy quickly, preferring to work out of improvisation and experimentation. The result is an album that feels both intimate and immediate. -Joel Francis

Before he was the driving force behind Wilco, singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy came of age musically in the influential, early ‘90s alt-country band Uncle Tupelo. When Tweedy announced the next Wilco release would be a country album, longtime fans’ hearts skipped a beat.
True to Tweedy’s word, Cruel Country, the band’s 12th release splits the difference between Wilco’s 2007 album Sky Blue Sky and Uncle Tupelo’s final album, Anodyne.
Cruel Country comes out of the gate showing the fightin’ side of Tweedy. On opening track “I am My Mother,” Tweedy takes aim at “dangerous dreams” “streaming over the Southern border” and declares “If it was up to me, I would have rejected/The idea that money could keep you poor. On the following title track, Tweedy confesses “I love my country, stupid and cruel/Red, white, and bluе.” It’s not hard to figure out who Tweedy is singing about on “Hints”: “There is no middle when the other side would rather kill than compromise.”
The lyrical bite is tempered by the music. Never hurried, Cruel Country lopes along at a gentle pace for most of its 77 minutes. Strummed acoustic guitars mingle with pedal steel, keyboards and French horns, creating a pastoral backdrop that is either serene or stultifying, depending on one’s passion in understated masterpieces. -Joel Francis
