The Besnard Lakes – The Besnard Lakes Are the Last Great Thunderstorm Warning

Weekly Review:

Montreal post-rockers Besnard Lakes hit the nail on the head with the title of their sixth album. If Sigur
Ros is the sound of glaciers and angels, then the Lakes are a distant Midwestern thunderstorm. The kind
you take in on a summer evening from the comfort and shelter of a covered porch.
At nine songs spanning just over 70 minutes, Besnard Lakes are all about epic, sweeping statements. The
music takes its time, slowly percolating and building until momentum sweeps the piece to another
plane.
Written as a homage to the passing of a band member’s father and other artists who’ve died recently,
the album is best absorbed as a whole. Picking apart specific tracks or moments would rob the four sides
of vinyl of their majesty. While a lengthy grandiose rumination on the afterlife may not seem enjoyable
in the current stress-filled paradigm, by the time the 18-minute closing track ends, one feels truly
transported. -Joel Francis

Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio – I Told You So

Weekly Review:

Colemine Records, purveyors of funk, jazz and soul are back with another gem. The second studio
release by the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio finds the happy, bouncy middle ground between Jimmy Smith
and Booker T. and the MGs.
The spare lineup comprised of just Hammond B-3 organ, guitar and drums leaves plenty of room for
dancing and grooving. The song “From the Streets” makes the most of this space, offering guitarist
Jimmy James serpentine playing over drummer Dan Weiss’ supremely funky beat. A few songs later,
James unleashes a supremely gnarly guitar solo on “Aces,” providing a high point on the album.

James’ guitar also tackles the iconic saxophone line on the band’s cover of “Careless Whisper” by
Wham! Unsuspecting listeners may think they have stumbled upon the Hi Rhythm section doing a lost Al
Green cut.
At times the group resembles another organ-jazz trio, Medeski, Martin and Wood. Both combos know
how to groove deep in the pocket, but Lamar’s threesome is less heady and more accessible. Play this
one for your Motown-loving grandparents and the far-out uncle who sits in a smoky room spinning Dr.
Lonnie Smith. -Joel Francis

The Flying Burrito Brothers – The Gilded Palace of Sin

Weekly Review:

The Flying Burrito Brothers sounds like your favorite late-night, college-town stop for Mexican food. The
groundbreaking band helped lay the foundations of country-rock in the late ‘60s. The Burrito Brothers’
debut, The Gilded Palace of Sin, continues the vision of “cosmic American music” founding member
Gram Parsons brought to the Byrds’ classic album Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
The energy and direction Parsons brought to the Byrds during his brief time in the band was enough to
convince founding member Chris Hillman to join Parson in the Burrito Brothers. Parsons and Hillman
wrote most of the album together, delivering classics such as the cautionary tale “Sin City,” “My Uncle,”
an ode to draft dodging and “Hippie Boy,” a commentary on the counter-culture.
With the help of Sneaky Pete Klienow’s pedal steel guitar and Hillman’s harmony vocals, the Brothers
turn “Dark End of the Street” and Aretha Franklin’s “Do Right Woman” from Memphis soul to Nashville
country without sacrificing the emotional integrity of the original recordings.
The Gilded Palace of Sin is high point in Parson’s brief, meteoric career. The music here not only pointed
the way to contemporary country-rock hits “Wild Horses” and “Garden Party,” but helped cement the
sound of Alt. Country/No Depression/Americana/Roots music for the decades to come. -Joel Francis

Lee Morgan – The Rajah

Weekly Review:

Nearly all of trumpet player Lee Morgan’s lead albums were released on Blue Note, but some weren’t
released until after his death. Recorded in 1966, The Rajah sat in the vaults until the mid-1980s. Backed
by Hank Mobley on sax and bassist Paul Chambers, The Rajah is an enjoyable album that never quite
catches fire.
The two songs on side one exemplify the album. “A Pilgrim’s Funny Far” runs more than 13 minutes and
pianist Cedar Walton offers several fine solos, but the overall performances simmers without boiling.
The title track is similarly laid-back. Morgan and Mobley made several great albums together, but their
unison playing on the song “The Rajah” lacks the competitive edge found on Dippin’, their collaboration
from the previous year.
The prolific Morgan had already released two other albums in 1966, so its understandable why Blue
Note shelved this session. While it is good it is finally available for mass consumption, The Rajah is
second-tier Morgan and better suited for devoted fans. Newcomers should start with The Sidewinder,

Cornbread or The Procrastinator. To hear Morgan and Mobley together, try No Room for Squares,
Dippin’ or, reaching back a bit, 1959’s Peckin’ Time. -Joel Francis

Paul Chambers – Bass on Top

Weekly Review:

Bass player Paul Chambers was just 22 years old when he entered the studio to record Bass on Top, his
third solo album. At the time of its release in 1957, Chambers was celebrated for his role in the Miles
Davis Quintet and session work with John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean and many others.
Chambers wanted his bass to be the dominant instrument on Bass on Top. The first two minutes of
album opener “Yesterdays” is just Chambers’ beautifully bowed bass with some nice accent chording
from guitarist Kenny Burrell. The rest of the quartet are more involved on the rest of the album, but
there’s never any doubt of who is in charge. Burrell may have the lead instrument on Charlie Parker’s
“Chasing the Bird,” but Chambers takes all the (lengthy) solos.
There are a lot of great jazz quartet albums, but very few that sound like this, oriented around the bass.
That makes for a fascinating listen, but the conversation between these world-class musicians makes it a
delight to turn to again and again. -Joel Francis

PJ Harvey – Is This Desire?

Weekly Review:

Polly Jean Harvey has never made the same album twice, but she was clearly looking for something
different after the ferocious snarl of her debut Dry and its two acclaimed follow-up releases.
Harvey labored over Is This Desire? for more than three years, writing and recording solitude. You can
hear the exile in “Angelene,” the opening track. “But there’ll be one who will collect my soul and come
to me,” Harvey sings. “Two-thousand miles away/He walks upon the coast/Two-thousand miles away.”
The character studies and hushed arrangements on “Catherine” and “The River” foreshadow Harvey’s
2007 gem White Shadow. While the drum machines and touches of electronics place the album in the
same ‘90s ecosystem as Ultra-era Depeche Mode, U2’s Pop, Portishead and Massive Attack, Is This
Desire? hardly sounds – or feels – dated.
The raw arrangements and fury that marked Harvey’s early albums are mostly gone on Desire, but don’t
let this understated approach trick you into thinking the characters in “The Garden” or “The Wind” have
any less emotion that the one that proclaimed “Rub ‘Till It Bleeds.”
Often overlooked in Harvey’s catalog, Is This Desire? is a courageous exploration of spellbinding poetry
and emotion. Rescue this album from the dustbins of ignorance and give it another spin. -Joel Francis
