Weekly Review:

There is something very magical about the songwriting that appears on most any album from The Jayhawks; since the day they first entered the music scene in the late ‘80s, almost everything they have written melds together seamlessly; regardless of the song’s message. Thankfully, the ensemble from Minneapolis is back once again with their latest – XOXO. Simply put, XOXO is a masterpiece of musical craft that softly pulls the listener forward with each new revelation. If you’re looking for a piece of music that goes thousands of different exploratory directions (which I often like), this isn’t the one. The Jayhawks new LP is a more nuanced affair; it’s the type of album that gets better each time you hear it; the lyrics make more and more sense with each listen; the delicate, exquisite harmonies continue to reveal new dimensions of themselves with each repeat play; and the vocals…well, I seriously LOVE bands in which everyone in the band is a superior vocalist. XOXO features songwriting & lead vocals from all four members: Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan, and Karen Grotberg. These four emote with the best of them.

This release is not a piece of music that charts a thousand new directions; this LP is not that sort of ride. XOXO is relaxing, it kind of makes you feel like you’re on some very pleasant float trip on some Missouri river, and while there’s certainly some risk, you just feel safe. (Check out the tune, “Living in a Bubble”, this clever song is about finding a modicum of comfort in an increasingly stressful world – anyone need less stress?). Take this trip with the Jayhawks, from start to finish, around every bend, awaits a new discovery, a new experience, some new insight. This is a satisfying record! It’s a record you will play over and over.

Here what you get is more like the quality of the great classical rock music record from the ‘60s or ‘70s, than something radically new, or “alternative”. If you were around in 1971, when it was actually possible to pull the cellophane off a new copy of Neil Young’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, you might remember what it was like at that moment to hear music in real time you knew was going to be timeless. XOXO has that kind of appeal to me. By the way, I should mention the cover artwork is just awesome too. Buy this record, play it ten times, and then tell me I’m wrong. -Gordon Fick

Around here, the Jayhawks are a collegiate mascot that is either loved or loathed depending on your collegiate loyalties, however to many music fans the Jayhawks are an alt-country band from Minneapolis that just celebrated 35 years of being a band. Just because the old way was working did not mean the band was not ready for change, on their latest effort, the Jayhawks bring more voices to the table. Recorded at Pachyderm studios (where Nirvana recorded “In Utero”) the band lived, wrote and recorded together.  Xoxo is a nice mix of vocals and songwriting from the entire band, not just lead singer/usual voice Gary Louris. “It was time to open things up,” says Gary Louris. “The Jayhawks are a true band, one where everyone’s an equal, and we wanted to make a record that really reflected that.”

Weekly Review:

The debut album from Philadelphia singer Jill Scott is a near-perfect blend of soul, jazz and poetry. Her gig as a spoken-word poet shines brightly through her lyrics a delivery throughout the album. (Sample stanza: I felt Dizzy, Sonya, heaven and Miles between my thighs/Better than love,we made delicious.) Sympathetic production from DJ Jazzy Jeff (Townes) and the Roots (as the Grand Wizzards) create a neo-soul backdrop of acoustic instruments and horns that her words ride like waves.
Who is Jill Scott? brought some of the singer’s best-loved and well-known songs, including “Love Rain,” “One is the Magic #” and “A Long Walk.” No less than Beyonce has been known to drop a bit of “He Loves Me” into her set. Who is Jill Scott? Either a longtime favorite or your next favorite singer. If you love soul music, you need this album. -Joel Francis

Weekly Review:

Margo Price is a long-time Nashville resident, but her third album is loaded with the sun-soaked hallmarks of Los Angeles. The title song, which opens the album, operates on the same wavelength as Jenny Lewis’ recent masterpiece On the Line. The next track, “Letting Me Down” has a strong Jackson Browne vibe. Later, “Heartless Mind” has a very ‘80s feel that seems peeled from a John Hughes montage.
Her sound may be different, but Price is as defiant as ever, taking on motherhood, heartbreak and a raft of political issues such as housing and health care, in a sharp stanza or two that allows an idea to linger while the song moves along.
Special notice must be given to Tom Petty’s keyboard wizard Benmont Tench, who frequently gives the performances a Heartbreakers air, and producer Sturgill Simpson who keeps the album cohesive and gives “Twinkle Twinkle” the same fuzzy feel as his album “Sound and Fury.” -Joel Francis

Weekly Review 2:

Her experiences read like a list that’s usually reserved for the down-and-out characters that country music artists like herself usually sing about: becoming homeless, sleeping rough, losing your child, hitting the bottle, a stint behind bars, and pawning treasured belongings for one last stab at success.
She sang about those hardships on her 2016 debut Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, giving it a true grit and winning her many a plaudit. Then, on her excellent follow-up just a year and a half later, All American Made, she took aim at gender inequality, poverty, and the President of America himself, asking how he’s able to sleep at night. It was a different Margo Price on display, one not so much concerned with sharing her own story as having her own voice heard in a genre – and a world – where women always come second.
In 2020, on her new album That’s How Rumors Get Started, Margo Price is different yet again. Her first two albums stuck closely to the country music blueprint, with an edgy twist here and a delightful flourish there, but this time around, Price has aimed to tear that blueprint up completely. And what better way to do that than calling on friend and fellow country bard Sturgill Simpson to produce your record, whose album last year, Sound & Fury, was a complete and totally electric departure from the country western sound.
His touch is felt directly on the hurtling, screeching “Heartless Mind”, and on “Twinkle Twinkle”, a scuzzy, dirty bluesy rocker. But it’s his assembly of ace session musicians for the recording of the album – whose collective credits include Iggy Pop, D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye and Tom Petty – that really help to steer Price down the new road she’s travelling. As usual, she’s co-written most of the songs with her husband Jeremy Ivey, and the masterful band subtly forms a lush, rich and dynamic backdrop, over which Price’s honeyed vocals shine. When she’s backed by the Nashville Friends Gospel Choir on ballad “Hey Child” and the boppy “Prisoner Of The Highway”, the performance becomes powerfully soulful and uplifting. And though Price’s voice is nothing but sweet and tender, you can always count on her to dish out a sobering message (“If it don’t break you, it might just make you rich / You might not get there, and on the way it’s a bitch”) or a sharp rebuke (“you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth”).
Margo Price has broken free from the shackles of country music on That’s How Rumors Get Started, pivoting effortlessly and elegantly towards a classic rock sound. There’s a whole lot more space and freedom to express herself now, and it suits her real well. -Albert Schmurr

Weekly Review:

The moment the needle drops on Back to Land, the third album from the San Francisco psychedelic group Wooden Shjips, a trace amount of smoke seeps from the speakers. By the time the title song is going full bore the sweet smoke is now unmistakably filling the room. Short of stopping the record, nothing can be done to stop the foggy ambience. It’s best just to lay back and embrace the feeling.
It doesn’t take long for the four-piece band to lay down a groove wide enough to accommodate an aircraft carrier. Once there, an organ spars with Ripley Johnson’s echo-laden vocals against a tight, minimalist rhythm section while Johnson’s guitar soars high in the heavens. There isn’t necessarily a lot of deviation from song to song, but why play with a perfect formula? Listeners will figure out pretty quickly if Wooden Shjips are their cup of tea. If so, welcome to the promised land. -Joel Francis
