Bob Mould – Sunshine Rock
Recently I posted a photo on Instagram of the new Bob Mould album and one comment caught my eye.
“He is a curmudgeon.”
If you don’t know the history of Mould, a self described “miserablist” and someone described as “literally the meanest person I have ever met” by one of his band mates, curmudgeon is quite a compliment. Based on that description, it’s safe to assume his latest release is going to be emotionally dark and brooding, especially in a political climate perfect for the punk rock music he started his career with, except, it’s the opposite.
Mould started spending time in Germany and has a new(er) outlook on life. He consciously decided he wanted to write a happier album and the output of that is Sunshine Rock. It’s a (mostly) upbeat, guitar riff filled 12 song offering that catches you right out of the gate.
Title track Sunshine Rock evokes the top down wind in your face punk song that deserves a spot on your upcoming summer playlist. If you need more sunshine, there is also Sunny Love Song, Camp Sunshine and Western Sunset. Yes, four songs about sunshine.
To me, Camp Sunshine is is the second best song about sunshine on the album. An acoustic campfire inspired singalong, you will want to grab your neighbor and sway to the beat. It’s campy, but sincere as the lyrics age with the song culminating in the line “All we need is some sunshine.”
Not all songs are serotonin injections, Lost Faith dives into the darkness in the verse while exploring trying to find anonymity in this ever unanimous, socially connected world. Just when the darkness is set to overcome you are hit with a bright light that is the chorus. Which jolts you back out of your doldrum day dream. Inspired by the church bells outside his home in Germany, Mould hoped to recreate that sound and did so with what I believe to be an accordion. A punk rock accordion, like this album that makes me happy. -Brad Simmons

Gary Clark Jr- This Land
In the eight years since Gary Clark Jr. stormed onto the scene with an epic performance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival he has released his EP, “The Bright Lights” and now the latest album, “This Land”, which finds the blues, rock, hip-hop, soul artist once again hitting on all pistons.
The album begins with the title track, which is a politically charged anthem where Clark sings, “This Land is my land”, features the fiery guitar playing that we’ve come to expect from Gary. Like his previous work, “This Land” blends styles from blues, rock, R&B, hip hop, soul, and even reggae on “Feeling Like A Million” and punk rock with “Gotta Get Something,” which features gritty, distorted vocals. For those seeking more blues, Clark delivers with the foot stomping blues of “The Governor.” The song is heard at the beginning and the end of the “This Land” music video. The album closer, “Dirty Dishes Blues” is another stripped down blues track.
One of the album’s standout tracks is certainly “Pearl Cadillac,” which sees Clark channel his inner Prince. The track has a great vibe featuring Gary’s falsetto vocals and signature guitar tone on a solo that really elevates the song. Other standouts include “I Got My Eyes On You” and “Feed The Babies,” which features horns that compliment Gary’s falsetto vocals really well.
Gary Clark Jr. delivers an album with something for everybody. Clark is an artist who’s not afraid to take risks and won’t be confined to any specific genre and that deserves applause. Don’t worry about the genre Clark plays because at the end of the day it’s about enjoying the music. And enjoy the music you will. Music is about connecting, it’s about feeling, and Clark makes the listener feel on this album. “This Land”, features some of Clark’s strongest work to date. It’s an album with soul. Pick up a copy from the crew at The Underground, you’ll be glad you did. Albert Schmurr.
