Weekly Review:
Anderson East – Encore
“Dating Miranda Lambert and calling Nashville home, you would expect Anderson East to crank out radio friendly, truck loving, beer chugging bro country. Fortunately for us, Anderson takes a different approach with a solid sophomore soul revival album. While there is no bro country, there are plenty of masculine undertones. King for a Day is a thick with instrumental layers but thin with need for interpretation about his desire to spend the day with a companion that he will likely not see again. It’s a song that could have fit perfectly into Van Morrison’s Moondance. This Too Shall Last is a soulful track where Anderson’s vocal prowess really starts to soar. It has a raw but controlled power that is perfectly paired with the background vocals. By the fourth track, the gloves come off and he starts to pull no punches. The cover of Sorry You’re Sick hits you like pep band with a wall of sound. It’s fun, a bit campy and a quick hit lasting less than two and a half minutes. The track Girlfriend provides the conflict that only a baritone saxophone can provide. It could easily be the male perspective to Amy Winehouse’s song You Know I’m No Good. The real gem of the album is All On My Mind. It’s rife with tension that only a passionate relationship or a string section can provide. This song has both.
Overall, this album is incredibly enjoyable and fun to listen to. It’s a grab bag of tempos and styles, which makes it an enjoyable listen the entire way through.”

Review of the Week:
“No Cross, No Crown” is the 10th studio release for this band originally from North Carolina, and it sees the return of guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan – the one who brought us “Deliverance” (1994) & “Wiseblood” (1996). Those two albums brought COC to a much bigger audience, and this album just solidifies the chemistry between Pepper, guitarist Woody Weatherman, bassist Mike Dean and drummer Reed Mullin.
