Father John Misty – God’s Favorite Customer

Weekly Review:

Father John Misty is changing.  No, not the soulful, whimsical sounds you have come to know and love, but possibly less self obsessed and a bit more depressed.  Like Superman realizing that kryptonite was real and he was not in invincible, we find Father John struggling with mortality and possible loss. As someone that wrote a concept album about himself, you would expect him to continue to tell the world just how amazing he is, however on God’s Favorite Customer, his latest release, we find him to be more wistful, thoughtful and sad.

Please Don’t Die is a crowning example of this.  “Somebody stop this joyless joyride, Im feeling older than my 35.”  He goes on to croon “Honey, I’m worried about you, your just to much to lose… So please don’t die, wherever you are tonight.”  It’s thoughtful, paranoid and telling about the stark realities of getting just a bit older.
The Palace tells the story of a hotel stay, which is a reoccurring theme throughout the album.  I picture Father John living in a hotel, clad in the bathrobe provided, living off room service, writing, making a mess…  My favorite part… “Last night I wrote a poem, man I must have been in the poem zone.” Classic Father John.
Don’t worry, he finds a way to make it about himself – Mr. Tillman, a song based on his interaction with a hotel clerk the morning after what sounds like a night filled with spotty memories.  On the surface it’s fun, but just below the surface it’s telling a story of struggling to control his rock and roll lifestyle.
Father John has made another great album, about himself. Again. Yet this one is different in all the ways you want different to be.  Excited to see where he goes from here.

Soccer Mommy- Clean (indie exclusive limited edition colored vinyl)

Weekly Review:

Soccer Mommy “Clean”

Sophie Allison, the 20-year-old known as Soccer Mommy, has made her entrance into the music world with her debut album, “Clean.”which is the follow up to her EP release. Her music is not the usual flashy pop that dominates today; instead, it exhibits an intermixing of indie-influenced rock and alternative. Most of the tracks consist of just an electric guitar and Soccer Mommy’s somber vocals.

The album’s overall use of guitar and mournful singing is apparent in the opening track, “Still Clean.” Both its vocals and guitar are calm and collected. It isn’t until the next song, “Cool,” that the album picks up the pace — the song has a upbeat dance sensation to it, thanks to its eccentric beat.

In “Last Girl”, the artist is both jealous of and impressed by her crush’s girlfriend. The instrumentals and lyrics instantly sound like a entertaining jam session. “Scorpio Rising” also breaks away from the usual instrumentals. The song starts off quietly, then surprises with a pleasant rush of energy from exciting instrumentals. Soccer Mommy’s vocals become emotional and reveal a vulnerable side. The track retreats back to quiet but is not afraid to return to that impressive energy.

The album winds down with the secondtolast song, “Interlude.” It is a peaceful guitar solo. Having established herself as one of America’s great young songwriters with this debut LP, the future looks good for this soccer mom. Look for this and all the amazing treats only at the vinyl underground….Albert Schmurr.
