Monophonics – It’s Only Us
Weekly Review:
My current favorite distraction from the outside world is the latest release from the Monophonics. It’s Only Us is the fourth studio album from the Bay Area band, and its chalk full of soul with the psychedelic tendencies you’d expect from a band that hails from the home of the Grateful Dead.
As you’d expect, the tracks vary from up beat to down right sleepy, but one thing remains the same, the vocal powers of Kelly Finnigan. The hyper talented Finnigan released his first solo album last year The Stories People Tell on Colemine Records and it was easily one of my top three records of 2019. He continues to deliver on tracks like intro track Chances where his vocal stylings intermingle with duo of background singers. Punctuated by the horns and funky soul guitar, its the perfect recipe for an intro song.
It’s Only Us slows things down with a song about telling someone you love them for the first time. According to an interview with Finnigan, it’s a time when we are most vulnerable, which is how many of us feel in the world today. It’s an anthem of hope.
At eight total tracks and just under 40 minutes, you certainly get quality over quantity. It’s a quick listen, but one worth the time. -Brad Simmons
