It’s Charley Crockett New Vinyl Thursday at The Vinyl Underground at 7th Heaven. Check out this week’s list of new vinyl arrivals:

Albert Ayler – First Recordings 2

Aldous Harding – Warm Chris

Weekly Review:
Pitchfork calls Aldous Harding’s latest album, Warm Chris, “a record of portable solitude… opaque, surreal and above all lonely.”
The first track on Warm Chris, appropriately titled “Ennui” (boredom in French) unfolds a little like a mid tempo Stereolab demo. The lyrics to “Ennui”come across as a strange cut up about the the apparent randomness of happiness and pain:
“Cut it up, put it in my hand
You’ve become my joy you understand
Got a little color in the pan
I love it”
Tick-Tock is a slightly more groovy romp that feels playful and aloof while “Fever” charmingly plods along like a catchy nursery rhyme.
Deciphering Hardings lyrics can be a bit like decoding a Becket play. Luckily, the song structures are simple with a relaxed ease to them. Many of the arrangements remind me a bit of another down under artist’s most recent release, Courtney Barnett.
The title track to Warm Chris is a beautiful solo acoustic song that seems to express some inexpressible quality of unrequited love.
“I look away
Have I had a wicket on me all day
I love watching paper planes burn out there”
The stars of this song are the somber nylon stringed acoustic guitar that runs throughout the entire album as well as Harding’s intimately expressive vocal delivery.
Another miraculous aspect of this record is how much Harding manages to do with so little. The track “Lawn” is a delightful Samba, while “Bubbles” is a delightful piano driven smokey jazz track.
Subtlety, is a bold move in today’s day and age. The more I listen to this album the more it comes alive for me. Thanks here is a true deficit of artists creating something for people to live with over the coarse of months or even years. Luckily, Harding still does.

Father John Misty – Chloe and the Next 20th Century

Weekly Review:

Father John Misty may have started as a folk musician, but it has always been clear his ambition
stretched far beyond any one genre. On his last tour, Misty brought along a string section. Now, on his
fifth album, Chloe and the Next 20th Century, Misty goes all-in on the strings.
The result is something that lies between Harry Nilsson, Cole Porter and a David Lynch movie. “Goodbye
Mr. Blue” recalls Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” while “Only a Fool” swings like one of Willie Nelson’s
syrupy pre-Atlantic productions. “Funny Girl” would fit well in a playlist nestled beside post-World War
II/pre-rock and roll hits by Peggy Lee and Bing Crosby.
Taken together, the 11-song, 50-minute album metamorphosizes into dark noir theatre, a series of loose
vignettes that could easily inhabit a world like Lynch’s Blue Velvet. There aren’t enough through-lines to
call Chloe a concept album, but it’s enough to nourish a Hollywood dreamscape.
Ten years into Josh Tillman’s career as Father John Misty, Chloe is another fascinating wrinkle in this
unpredictable, divisive character. It may not be enough to persuade the doubters, but it is a sumptuous
feast for true believers and fence-post sitters. -Joel Francis

Kurt Vile – Watch My Moves

Weekly Review:

It took underground rock songwriter Kurt Vile four years to release his ninth studio album, but there
isn’t any great ambition or grand statement to be found on Watch My Moves. Instead, Vile serves up
what he’s always done – laid back, charming songs that sound like they are being formed during the
recording.

If anything, Vile’s low-key vibe undermines his songs. It takes a few listens for the album’s nuances to
bubble to the surface. For example, “Like Exploding Stones” is a seven-minute psychedelic jam, while
just two tracks later, “Hey Like a Child” is a more concise acoustic number. Yet both songs initially blend
together under the weight of the album’s affable amble.
At 15 songs and 74 minutes, Watch My Moves would definitely be improved with some pruning. The
best way to approach this monolith is to consider it two single-LPs in a shared gatefold sleeve, rather
than a double-LP release. Splitting the album in half makes it feel more nimble and helps the songs stand
apart.
Vile has always been a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type of artist. Anyone expecting big changes for
this major-label debut will be disappointed, but longtime fans will be glad to get more of the same from
an artist who has been unusually quiet for too long. -Joel Francis

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs – External Combustion

Weekly Review:

Mike Campbell spent 40 years as the lead guitarist in Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, letting his relentless
riffs and knotty solos speak for him. Petty’s death in 2017 forced Campbell into the spotlight. External
Combustion is Campbell’s second album with his new band the Dirty Knobs and the first with his name
out front.
As one would expect from the man who co-wrote “Refugee,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream” and “You Got
Lucky,” the best moments on External Combustion sound like lost Heartbreakers’ tracks. It’s hard to
listen to “State of Mind,” Campbell’s gorgeous duet with Margo Price, without imagining what Petty and
Stevie Nicks performing it. Likewise, album closer “Electric Gypsy” could have easily been a Petty single.
While External Combustion is more polished than the band’s 2020 debut, there are still plenty of garage-
rock moments. “Lightnin’ Boogie,” with fellow former Heartbreaker Benmont Tench on keyboards, lives
up to its name. The title track is mostly just a riff in search of a song, but it works because the band
sounds so good and their excitement is infectious.
Instead of trying to outrun the shadow of his former bandleader, Campbell basks in the triumphs they
once created together. The result is a delightful album somewhere that falls somewhere between the
Heartbreakers’ Hypnotic Eye and Mojo. -Joel Francis

Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Step Down
Weekly Review:
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble is a full on instrumental soul band based out of San Diego, CA.
From classic greats like The Meters, Booker T. And the MG’s and Isaac Hayes to their best known contemporaries like Budos Band, Menahan Street Band and Ghost Funk Orchestra, SFSE have been churning out cool music that gets unpretentious butts out on the dance floor since their debut studio album on Colemine Records in 2015. Their fourth album, “Step Down” is certainly no exception. The scope of this album is broad within its genre.
SFSE’s ace in the hole has always been its horn section. And that feature makes a strong introduction on  the opening track to Step Down with the laid back stabby, album titled opener.
This dovetails nicely into the 70’s psych soul vibes of track two: “The Other Side,” complete with jazz flute and tremolo fuzz guitar solo.
“Time To Rebuild” starts out with phat, boom bap, beat that’s begging to be sampled by some 90’s retro hiphop act. The infectious groove is counter balanced by a creamy horn part in syncopation with a whistling B3 organ line.
More complex, Afro beat rhythms are afoot with the sax heavy “Omnificent” while the track “Boardwalk” takes a funky drummer approach and twists it inside out with a  B3 sound reminiscent of the great Booker T. himself.
As the title would suggest “HighTimes” sees the band stretching out a bit into almost acid Jazz territory.
The album plays out with three more tracks that skate through more infectious grooves from hip-hop to trip-hop to cool cocktail jazz.
This one of those that you can just put on and let play and if someone’s not dancing by the end of the record, your probably partying in a grave yard. – Major Matt
