XTC – White Music

Weekly Review:

Before the great British pop band XTC known for their albums filled with exquisite psychedelia and lush
chamber pop they were a quartet of revved-up twentysomethings ready to kick down the doors of the
music scene. A new reissue of the band’s debut album, 1978’s White Music, captures the hyperactive
anxiety of the time.
XTC famously refused to perform live for much of their career, but the dozen songs on White Music
were built for the stage. Album opener “Radios in Motion” and “Cross Wires” bristle with punk energy
and urgency. Singles “This is Pop” and “Statue of Liberty” foreshadow the group’s more ornate pop
songwriting. Thanks to the prominence of Barry Andrews’ keyboards and Andy Partridge erudite
songwriting, White Music bears a sonic similarity to Elvis Costello’s late-‘70s albums with the
Attractions.
White Music’s most curious moment arrives in the middle of Partridge’s – with help from bandmate
Colin Moulding – barrage of two- to three-minute songs. A nearly six-minute cover of “All Along the
Watcher” is striking for sounding absolutely nothing like either Bob Dylan’s original version or Jimi
Hendrix’ famous interpretation. Moulding’s gulping vocals on “Watchtower” make it sound like he’s
trying to swallow every syllable, while an incongruous blues harp blows during the chorus. The
performance is anchored by a tight, funky rhythm section. It sounds like a mess, but it’s just intriguing
enough to work.
About 18 months after the release of White Music, XTC had already turned the page and were evolving
into the celebrated cult act they would become during the 1980s. The band never revisited this sound,
making White Music an energetic outlier in an illustrious catalog. -Joel Francis
