Weekly Review:

The James Hunter Six – Whatever It Takes

“James Hunter has been willing to do whatever it takes to remain true to himself, his music and his band mates over the past twenty plus year. James plus the irreplaceable five does not have the same commercial ring to it, but it is very much the case.  The newest member to the band joined over twenty years ago.  Despite the band being together for over two decades, it was a recent acquaintance that inspired much of the music for this album.

The first three tracks are written for and dedicated to his new wife Jessie.  She heard him on the radio and turned up at a show in New York City.  Not long after she was Mrs. Hunter and he was singing these songs to her to cheer her up during a long application process for UK residency.

I Don’t Wanna Be Without You paints a vivid picture of a bachelor recognizing that he has found the one.  “When we met, I was pretty well set in my ways. I didn’t care how or where I spent my days. But now that all has changed, I never wanna be the same, love you so that all I know is I don’t wanna be without you baby, like before…” Its deeply introspective and sweet – sharing with the audience that even when it was good – he had no idea how much better life could be.

Blisters is a blues influenced burner where James shares his talent as more than just MOJO Magazines “United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer.”  His guitar chops are as seasoned and interesting as his vocals.  If your head can still nod, this is one that will do just that.

Don’t Let Pride Take You For a Ride is the kind of song that begs you to kick back your chair and take the hand of the one sitting next to you.  It’s up tempo and fun.  It begs for a saxophone solo that it never gets, which makes me hope for a live album so we can really hear the band spread their wings.

If you like the kind of music Daptone puts out, or “modern, classic soul” then this will be a welcome addition to your collection.”

This monster came in this week and found a new home within hours. Why do I tell you this? Because if you aren’t following us on Instagram and Facebook you will miss out on chances like this. We buy used music and equipment every day. We put new, used, merchandise out every day. We post about it. This blog is once a week; our other social media platforms are up to the minute with all the vinyl news. Be happy, follow us. You’ll like it.

Speaking of equipment and great deals- we are an authorized dealer for the U-turn Audio Orbit Plus. Klipsch speakers had this to say about the Orbit, “We won’t mince words here – U-Turn Audio definitely has our recommendation. In fact, we like them so much that we’re bringing a bunch of their turntables to Las Vegas to use in our booth at CES 2015.”  The Orbit’s are built in Mass, not mass produced. Hand built in America. I can safely say that you can not find a better speaker for twice what an Orbit costs. Come take a look and we (the Vinyl Underground staff) will tell you how much we love ours as we own 5 between the 8 of us.
