Nduduzo Makhathini – In the Spirit of Ntu
Weekly Review:
Nduduzo Makhathini has been recording for nearly a decade, but it wasn’t until his last album that the
South African jazz pianist started to receive international recognition. On his 10th album as a leader and
second for Blue Note, Makhathini draws on ntu, an African philosophy based on balance with nature,
individual independence and collective cooperation.
As expected, this is not background music. It can be confrontational at times, but also sublime and
beautiful. Female vocalists Omagug (Makhathini’s wife) and Anna Widauer provide two of the album’s
most transcendent moments, on “Mama” and “Re-Amathambo,” respectively. Separated by several
tracks, the pieces become an oasis in the midst of more challenging numbers, such as “Emlilweni.” This
post-bop number, with guest saxophone player Jaleel Shaw, recalls John Coltrane’s spiritual work on
Impulse.
“Senze Nina” is a simmering prayer with a haunting choir based on an anti-apartheid chant that lies
somewhere between meditation and repentance. “Nyonini Le?” recalls Thelonious Monk in certain
passages and finds the piano and sax tugging against taught drumming.
In the Spirit of Ntu is a landmark release that searches through the remnants of tradition for a path to
the future. It’s a powerful, spiritual journey that rejects passive listening and both changes and
challenges the listener with each play. -Joel Francis

Princess Chelsea – Everything Is Going To Be Alright
Weekly Review:
New Zealand indie-pop singer Princess Chelsea has branded her fifth full-length release her “nervous
breakdown album.” In keeping with its optimistic title, Everything is Going to be Alright is more
accurately a 10-song journey through Chelsea’s recovery from breakdown. It’s a vulnerable look at how
Chelsea pieces herself back together.
The album starts and ends with two versions of the title song. The opening rendition is uncertain, built
around a haunting organ line and vocals that sound like Chelsea is trying to convince herself of a positive
outcome. By the time we journey to the end, Chelsea is more confident and comfortable in her own
skin. The closing arrangement reflects this with an arrangement nearly twice as long as the first version,
building up from Chelsea’s voice and organ into a swaggering band performance complete with guitar
solo.
Between these poles, Chelsea unfurls a catchy, upbeat melody disguising an examination of abuse
(“Love is More”), a sumptuous slice of chamber pop spiked with Sonic Youth guitar feedback (“I Don’t
Know You”) and delivers an ethereal torch song (“Dream Warrior”).
More than a decade after bursting onto the scene with “The Cigarette Duet,” Princess Chelsea continues
to blossom as an artist. With its intricate, tidy arrangements, Everything is Going to Be Alright feels at
times like the music equivalent of a diorama, offering a myriad of details to get lost in. -Joel Francis
