Animal Collective – Time Skiffs
Weekly Review:
Describing Animal Collective’s sound is difficult. The group is impressionistic (as opposed to
merely referential) and gives the listener impression that band members have probably spent
time with records by the Beach Boys, early Pink Floyd, probably the Grateful Dead, and maybe
Talking Heads. There doesn’t seem to be a template for Animal Collective albums, and its
albums can best be judged against themselves.
The new album, Time Skiffs, is immediately more spacious and hospitable than the previous
studio album, Painting With (and even the album before that, Centipede Hz). Perhaps that’s due
to the presence of more hammered, malleted, and scraped instruments that attack more than they
sustain. It feels like there’s more space, more breathing room.
The songs still feel a bit unique, but this is Animal Collective after all. Melodies feel jerky, at
times a bit like a skipping CD. And even as difficult as it might feel to roadmap some of these
songs, they feel like they go somewhere. The opening two tracks feel the most bombastic. The
band seems to settle in when the third song, “Prester John.” After that, the pacing feels perfect
with field recordings and extended passages that break up the busy moments.
“Cherokee” is an homage to road trips, a fun song that takes its time and seems to dissolve into
the next song, “Passer-by.” Unlike some previous albums, the emphasis is not on the drum kit.
There is an openness to Panda Bear’s time-keeping on Time Skiffs that opens space for the
vocalists.
Something final or complete about the last track, the unhurried “Royal and Desire.” Dekin’s
vocals feel hopeful, buoyed by the band’s harmonies. It feels almost like it could be a grandiose
Fleet Foxes song. But this is still Animal Collective, a band that has practically become its genre
and challenging to compare to others. And, in comparison only to other Animal Collective
albums, Time Skiffs is vital and invites the listener back for repeated listens.-Jonathon Smith

Jack White – Fear Of The Dawn (Blue Colored Vinyl, Indie Exclusive)
Weekly Review:
When the global pandemic forced prolific Jack White off the road, the rock guitarist found his pen had
dried up as well. After spending a year away from music, the creative floodgates opened and White
found himself with enough ideas for two albums. Fear of the Dawn is the first and most bombastic of the
two releases.
The man who wrote the sports anthem “Seven Nation Army” nearly 20 years ago, wants you to know
that he can still rock a mean guitar riff. Fear of the Dawn’s dozen tracks and 40 minutes are loaded with
grandiose guitar moments that channel anything from Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, delta
blues and AC/DC.
The eccentric experimentalism that overwhelmed White’s previous solo album, 2018’s Boarding House
Reach, are still present, but dialed back. Rapper Q-Tip returns the favor from White appearing on the
final A Tribe Called Quest by spitting a verse on “Hi-De-Ho,” a track that samples Cab Calloway. For “Into
the Twilight,” White samples two Manhattan Transfer songs.
Often, the tracks on Fear of the Dawn feel less like songs than excuses for White to create fuzzed-out
soundscapes and wail on his guitar. How well White succeeds depends on your appetite for overloaded
guitars. These pieces will no doubt sound amazing when White’s tour rolls into Starlight in August, but
music fans who prefer moderation might want to hold tight until White’s acoustic-based follow-up drops
in July. -Joel Francis

Orville Peck – Bronco
Weekly Review:
In 2019, country visionary Orville Peck released his debut album, Pony. Now Bronco, the eagerly
anticipated follow-up, is out. The analogy of pony to bronco is apt when comparing the two records.
Bronco is bigger in every measurable way – bigger budget, bigger supporting cast of musicians, bigger
song arrangements – without sacrificing the spirit of what made Pony so exciting.
The difference between Bronco and Pony is like going from VHS to DVD: Everything you loved is still
there, it’s just present in greater detail. A string section augments “Kalahari Down” and “Let Me Down,”
while a trumpet accents “Iris Rose.” Some of the album’s best moments come courtesy of Bria Salmena.
As lead vocalist for the Canadian indie rock band FRIGS, Salmena’s voice is the perfect counterpart for
Peck’s rich baritone.
Lyrically, Peck provides a peek behind the fringed veil, delivering an introspective set of songs that
embrace Pony’s queer subtext. Across the arc of the album, Peck tells the story of a wanderer caught in
the conflicting yearning between independence and companionship.
Peck may have upgraded his Pony for a Bronco, but the cowboy remains just as compelling as ever. -Joel Francis

Wet Leg – Wet Leg (Yellow Clear Vinyl, Limited Edition, Indie Exclusive, Digital Download Card)
The British indie rock duo comprised of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers known as Wet Leg hits all the right notes when it come to catchy, witty, sexy, and probably several more “y” words.
The British indie rock duo Wet Leg might be the best thing to come out of the pandemic so far.
Longtime friends Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were inspired to cut loose and be more musically
playful after watching Idles perform in 2019. The lockdowns gave the pair more time to write and record
together. After a steady trickle of singles across the second half of last year, Wet Leg’s full-length debut
has finally arrived.
Those who got hep to Wet Leg last year, will be glad to know that all of the band’s singles to date have
been collected here. Even better – the half-dozen songs album tracks that accompany the pair’s six
singles and just as bubbly and infectious.
Musically, Wet Leg draw from the energy of riot grrl and the snark of Mean Girls, turning chauvinistic
insults on their head on “UR Mom” and rejecting objectification on “Wet Dream.” It’s the kind of music
that makes you want to pogo around the room, shoot air pistols and make pew-pew sounds with the
band on the song “Angelica.”
Wet Leg is a giddy afternoon at the amusement park, full of warm sunshine, belly laughs and broad
smiles stained with cotton candy. Ignore this instant classic at your own detriment. -Joel Francis
