Mt. Joy – Mt. Joy
Meet the band Mt. Joy, based around the duo of Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper, friends that met and played together in school in Philadelphia. They had reunited in LA to start recording together and after their first single ‘Astrovan’ took off they focused on music entirely and formed a band. They then toured heavily alongside well known bands like The Shins.
Mt Joy follow the same vein of a modern day Grateful Dead; their sound is fairly eclectic, drawing from folk-rock, indie and country, whilst giving it psychedelic and soul edge; for example, ‘Dirty Love’ goes from light-hearted with a ukulele intro to serious with an ominous guitar tone and a groved out drum beat.
The whole album may be full of sunlight, enough indie-pop listenability and singalongs, take ‘Sheep’ or ‘Jenny Jenkins’ for example; whilst it remains sophisticated, interesting and full of truly passionate vocals from Matt Quinn, just listen to the lyrics and vocals in ‘Silver Lining’ or ‘St. George’. The end result is that it really can be an album for everyone who loves a bit of indie-folk. I feel like this is a great jumping off point for this band, and I believe they could be be capable of greater things to come. On the whole, the record is sophisticated and listenable, so it is well worth a trip to the ‘Underground’, and a visit with the ‘7th Heaven’ staff. -Albert Schmurr

80’s Bowie New Vinyl Thursday is here! Come get some new music. We are open until 9 pm.

For most vinyl lovers, the only thing better than finding an album you want is is finding an album you want on sale. With thousands of LP’s in stock at the Vinyl Underground, it can be a bit overwhelming on where to start. As someone who visits frequently, the best place to start is the “New” Clearance Section. It combines the fun of the dig with the frugal desire for a deal. All albums are brand new, sealed and ready for a forever home.
New artists and titles are added all the time. Grammy nominated Weezer’s Pacific Daydream was a recent find. Classics like the Velvet Underground’s Nico, or Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti have been found for less than $20. If mega bands are not your thing, smaller groups can be picked up as well. Titles from artists like The Banditios, Foxtrott, Courtney Marie Andrews, Sixx AM, The Wallflowers, Tech N9ne, Common, and Courtney Barnett have all been spotted recently. Many of these can be had starting at $5.00. I am willing to try new things for $5, so I have had a great time finding new bands that I would not normally be willing to pick up. At $5 the reward outweighs the risk. Next time you are in the shop, make sure you head over to the clearance section, you never know what gems you can find when digging. – Brad Simmons
