Billy Strings – Me/and/Dad (Indie Exclusive, Limited Edition, Colored Vinyl, Black, Smoke & Yellow Versions)

Weekly Review:

A.P. Carter arranged the lyrics to the song “Wandering Boy” nearly 100 years ago, but they could apply
to Strings’ early life as a boy who left home at 13 and used hard drugs and alcohol heavily. The first
verse tells of a boy alone, cold and far from home. The song’s poignant significance is obvious in a
snippet of conversation preserved after the performance on Billy Strings’ fifth album, Me/and/Dad.
While Me/and/Dad is for the most part a joyous celebration of the music Terry Barber first shared with
Strings, his son, when he was a toddler, the undercurrent of melancholy makes the performances even
sweeter. Helping the pair out are some of today’s best bluegrass musicians, including Jerry Douglas on
dobro, Jason Carter and Michael Cleveland on fiddles and the McCoury brothers Ron and Rob on
mandolin and banjo, respectively.
The ensemble romp through 14 classics, written by legends Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs,
Doc Watson and even George Jones. The performances are comfortable and lived-in – Strings literally
grew up playing these songs with Barber – but also heart-felt and energetic. At just 45 minutes,
Me/and/Dad is the perfect primer to introduce your friends to bluegrass music and Strings and also fall
in love with the performers and genre all over again. -Joel Francis

Elvin Jones – Revival: Live at Pookie’s Pub

Weekly Review:

Jazz drummer Elvin Jones made his name as the rhythmic cornerstone in John Coltrane’s classic quartet
from 1960 to 1966. Coltrane had passed just two weeks before the show captured on Revival: Live at
Pookie’s Pub.
Recorded in a small New York City club in the summer of 1967, this three-LP set rescues more than two
hours of material from the archives. The sound is a bit distant, but the fire in the performances makes
them worth hearing.
Encompassing just nine songs, Jones gives his ensemble plenty of room to stretch out, most of the songs
hover around 20 minutes. Jones is the unquestioned leader of the quartet, but tenor saxophonist Joe
Farrell is prominent, admirably filling some very large shoes. (Farrell was later a member of Chick
Corea’s Return to Forever.)
The set includes two songs from the Coltrane songbook, “Oleo” and “Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise.”
Farrell switches to flute for the later number, providing a different perspective than what Jones and
Coltrane cooked up on the legendary Live at the Village Vanguard album just a few years prior, in 1962.
Although Jones carved out a nice solo career both during his time in Coltrane’s ensemble and later,
Revival is an excellent chance to hear this powerful drummer lead a powerful live set on his own,
emerging from the shadow of his longtime friend and collaborator. -Joel Francis

Steve Lacy – Gemini Rights

Weekly Review:

The second album from R&B multi-hyphenate Steve Lacy is his strongest project to date. While Lacy’s
previous projects have been solitary works created on an iPhone or laptop, on Gemini Rights, Lacy
embraces the studio’s potential and help from other artists.
Vocalist Foushee is Lacy’s most prominent foil, receiving writing credits on half of the album’s 10 tracks
and duetting with Lacy on “Sunshine.” Despite the upbeat title and buoyant beat, “Sunshine” finds the
singers picking over the wreckage of a relationship before an extended coda that recalls Stevie Wonder
kicks in.
Lacy returns to the theme of heartbreak throughout Gemini Rights. On opening track “Static,” Lacy
asserts his bisexuality declaring he’s “looking for a bitch because I’m over boys” in abstract verses that
reference drug use and sex toys. By the time the album ends, 35 minutes later, on “Give You the World,”
Lacy is chastened by his soul searching, asking for another chance.
Much like his zodiac sign referenced in the title, Lacy keeps the album moving quickly, with a versatile
style that encompasses not only classic pop, funk and soul, but also hip hop and jazz. Even when the
verses are cold, Lacy’s production is warm and inviting. The result is an impressive slab of adventurous
R&B that continues to reveal new layers with each listen. -Joel Francis
